"Readings by Local Writers" pays tribute to co-founder of Writers' Night

YORK VILLAGE - The York Public Library's "Readings by Local Writers" will dedicate its September program to the group's co-founder, Mila Hoffman, who died in June.

The event will take place at the library on Friday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m.

Above all, Hoffman brought a contagious energy and excitement to all her endeavors. She was fully engaged in two writing groups and a vocal opponent of the war in Iraq. People who met her often reported that they were both more enlightened and more positive about their lives and the course of humanity as a result of interacting with her.

Some of the many writers Hoffman inspired will present pieces of their own as a tribute to her outstanding professional and creative spirit. Her husband and daughter will lend their voices as well, reading from Hoffman's most recent body of work.

The program will feature readings by Fran Sullivan and Betty Ford, members of the Mainely Driftwood writers' group; Barbara Hero and Bette Freedson, members of the Open Tide Collective; a group of York County health care professionals writing about issues of human emotions and behavior; aspiring writer Laury Greening, and The Independent's own contributing writer and columnist, Virginia Woodwell.

A clinical psychologist, therapist and academician, Mila Hoffman had in recent years turned her energy to honing her writing skills. Her articles often appeared in local newspapers and other publications.

Please join these writers for a memorable evening of reading on Friday, Sept. 29, at 7 pm. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served.

The York Public Library is located at 15 Long Sands Road in York. For more information, call 363-2818.
