Fun on the beach for a good cause
By Jennifer L. Saunders
YORK BEACH - Local resident and business owner Walter Woods and his family and friends are doing it again. The event will once again by a community bonfire on Long Sands Beach, but this time the organizers are hoping to help two local causes: Hospice of York and the York Food Pantry.
Woods, with the support of a group of family and friends, hosted the first such event after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Since that time, the efforts have continued, including a benefit bonfire last year for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
This year's event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 7, from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. and promises to include food, music, face-painting and, of course, the bonfire itself.
There will be a raffle to benefit Hospice of York, the only all-volunteer hospice in Maine south of Brunswick, as well as a chance to bring nonperishable food items to help the York Food Pantry, which is in desperate need of donations with food supplies at an all-time low in recent weeks.
Hospice of York Director Dee Bickmore said the "beach boys," as she has come to call Woods and Hospice of York volunteers Ralph Thompson and John Delude as they work on planning for the event, are giving their all to offer an event with something for everyone.
See next week's edition of The Independent for all the details on this special community event.
