Deadline to nominate your choice for 2006 York Citizen of Year is Oct. 1

YORK - The Oct. 1 deadline for Citizen of the Year nominations for the annual honor sponsored by the Greater York Region Chamber of Commerce is just around the corner.

Festival of Lights Committee members are asking local residents to nominate someone they know who has served the town of York either by giving time as a volunteer in such capacities as assisting a local church, organization, school or service club, or through any selfless act that has helped to make York a better place to live.

"Oftentimes it is the unsung hero who makes the biggest impact on a community and it is individual community members who know best what their friends, neighbors and co-workers are doing to better the town of York," said Cheryl Farley of the Festival of Lights Committee in an announcement of the nomination deadline.

The Festival of Lights Committee, which is made up of representatives from Old York Historical Society, The York Parks and Recreation Department, Town Hall, York Police Department and York Hospital, as well as community members, reviews all nomination forms and submits five finalists to the Greater York Region Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. The chamber board votes for the finalist.

The Citizen of the Year Award will be announced at the chamber's annual membership dinner in November. The person chosen for the award will be an honorary guest at the dinner and will also serve as the grand Marshal of this year's Festival of Lights Parade on Dec. 2.

Past award winners include Bill & Phoebe Foster (1993), Verna Rundlett (1994), Rosie Lent (1995), Bainbridge Parsons (1996), Pat Bacon (1997), Harold Radochia (1998), Leo and Diane Flynn (1999), Rita Turner (2000), Mike Lee (2001), Alan Junkins (2002), Gordon and Donna Lewis (2003), Rick Mace (2004) and Virginia Parsons (2005).

Through the award, the Greater York Region Chamber of Commerce hopes to recognize and thank people whose individual efforts have had a positive impact on the community as a whole.

Nomination forms can be picked up at the Old York Historical Society Administration Building, The Greater York Region Chamber of Commerce and the York Public Library.

Individuals may also say "thank you" to a deserving person by submitting a letter of nomination by Oct. 1 via mail to: Citizen of the Year c/o Greater York Chamber, 1 Stonewall Lane, York, ME 03909.

Nominations may also be dropped off at the Old York Historical Society Administration building at 207 York Street.
