Life Line Screening offered Oct. 20
YORK HARBOR - Residents living in and around the York community can be screened to reduce their risk of a stroke.Life Line Screening will be at St. George's Episcopal Church in York Harbor on Oct. 20 and appointments will begin at 9 a.m. and pre-registration is required. These non-invasive and painless ultrasound tests help people identify their risk for stroke, vascular diseases or osteoporosis early enough for their physicians to begin preventive procedures.
A stroke, also know as a "brain attack," is ranked as the third leading killer in the world and the second among women. Through preventive screenings, the risk of having a stroke can be greatly reduced.
Screenings involve the use of ultrasound technology and scan for potential health problems related to blocked arteries, which can lead to a stroke; aortic aneurysms, which can lead to a ruptured aorta, and hardening of the arteries in the legs, which are a strong predictor of heart disease.
Also offered for men and women is a bone density screening to assess the risk of osteoporosis.
"I was asymptomatic so I can only guess at what the outcome might have been if I had not responded," John Brady, a South Portland resident who participated in a past Life Line screening, said in announcement of the Oct. 20 event.
Each screening requires 10 minutes or less to complete. A complete vascular package, including the Stroke/Carotid Artery, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and Ankle Brachial Index (hardening of the arteries) screenings, costs $109. Sign up for a complete vascular package, include the osteoporosis screening, for $129.
Life Line Screening was established in 1993 and has since been described as the nation's leading provider of vascular screenings. Over 75 ultrasound teams are on staff to travel to local communities to conduct the screenings.
