Area charter school hosts visiting day
LIMESTONE - The Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM), a member of the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science and Technology and Maine's only public residential magnet chartered school, is hosting a visiting day for current high school freshmen and sophomores on Sept. 30.The event will be held at the Maine School of Science and Mathematics campus.
Visiting students will tour the residence hall, and academic building and learn about the curriculum and opportunities that MSSM provides during a faculty/student panel presentation.
MSSM's extensive academic program provides a full curriculum of studies with a well-balanced humanities program and intensive science and mathematics offerings.
At the beginning of the second semester, Jay Term affords students the opportunity to broaden their traditional academic experiences through internships, special courses, independent projects and overseas travel.
The Maine School of Science and Mathematics is beginning its 12th year with a 40 percent increase in enrollment over the 2005 academic. There are 69 new students from 50 Maine high schools throughout the state from Fort Kent to Kittery.
"Our statewide admission program seeks to bring outstanding students to this unique learning environment," said Executive Director Walt Warner. "These students are coming here to get an outstanding education with their peers from around the state."
Freshmen and sophomores interested in applying for the 2007-2008 academic year are encouraged to begin their applications as soon as possible. The application priority review date is Feb. 16, 2007. Applicants must take either the PSAT or SAT I test as part of the application process.
