Early childhood education and more on tap for October

YORK VILLAGE - On Saturday, Oct. 21, at 10:30 a.m., Maine Attorney General Steven Rowe will be visiting the York Public Library.His topic is one of his personal passions - early childhood education and development. Some recently acquired library books on the topic of children include "Adoption: Your Step-by-Step Guide" by Mardie Caldwell; "Heading Home with your Newborn: From Birth to Reality" by Laura Jana; "Baby Read-Aloud Basics" by Caroline Blakemore; "When Your Child has a Disability: The Complete Sourcebook of Daily and Medical Care" by Mark Batshaw; "Children with Autism: A Parents' Guide" edited by Michael D. Powers; "The Wonder of Girls: Understanding the Hidden Nature of Our Daughters: and "The Minds of Boys: Saving Our Sons From Falling Behind in School and Life" by Michael Gurian; "Music Lessons: Guide Your Child to Play a Musical Instrument (And Enjoy It!)" by Stephanie Stein Crease; "Loving your Child is Not Enough: Positive Discipline That Works" by Nancy Samalin; "How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk" by Adele Faber and Elain Mazlish; "Breaking the Code: Two Teens Reveal the Secrets to Better Parent-Child Communication" by Lara Fox and Hilary Frankel, and "Boy Crazy! Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 3 p.m., Rachel of ChildLight Yoga, will be holding a yoga class for middle school students. Come if you've always wanted to learn more about it or if you are a yoga student who just wants more mat time.
Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 2:30 p.m., Kit Wang will be holding the first of two knitting sessions. These sessions are for beginning knitters but more experienced knitters are welcome. If you want to make Kit's beginning project of a scarf, please bring a set of knitting needles (10-13 American or 6mm-9mm) and a two- to four-ounce skein of worsted or bulky yarn.
Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 2:30 p.m., Kit Wang will be holding the second of two knitting sessions.
LIBRARY DISPLAY
Oct. 6 is "National Diversity Day." The library will be recognizing diversity with an exhibit of books and other materials on that topic. The exhibit is co-sponsored with the York Diversity Forum, whose goals are to increase understanding and acceptance of people of different races, cultures, sexual orientations, religions, ages and abilities, and to reduce the incidence of prejudicial language and action in our community.
ART EXHIBITS
Fran Scully will exhibit her art work in the library during October and November. Don't miss her gallery talk on Thursday, Oct. 12, at 6:30 p.m.
York Art Association artist Alice B. Hogan's watercolors are now on display in the Kennebunk Room. Subjects of her work include Maine seascapes, landscapes of familiar Maine scenes, as well as a couple from the Southwest, and people. Hogan has been a part-time resident of York since the late 50s. She spends the rest of the year in Maryland.
COMING EVENTS
Throughout the fall, the library is sponsoring two identical "Let's Talk About It" series on Jewish literature on Thursdays at 7 p.m. Both sections of this series are fully subscribed, but we are listing the dates and times of the remaining sessions so that attendees can find the information if needed. Series A meets Oct. 5 and 26, Nov. 16, and Dec. 7. Series B meets Oct. 19, Nov. 9 and 30, and Dec. 14.
On Friday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. award-winning photographer and author Peter Randall will discuss his new book "New Hampshire Then and Now." A native of the New Hampshire Seacoast, Randall is the 12th generation of his family to live in the region.
On Saturday, Oct. 22, from 3 to 5 p.m., the library will host a candidates' forum for the District 1 Congressional race. We expect representatives from the Tom Allen, Darlene Curley and Dexter Kamilewicz campaigns to be present to answer questions and present their platforms.
On Tuesday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to noon, York Hospital and the Agency on Aging will present an information session on Medicare prescription services.
On Friday, Oct. 27, continue celebrating at the library after the annual town Halloween Parade which begins in front of Town Hall at 4 p.m. It's a great event that fills the library with ghosts, ghouls and other wonderfully costumed guests and their families.
