Kucinich to host local forum Monday on saving the nation's civil liberties

OGUNQUIT - Dennis K. Kucinich, 2004 presidential candidate who is now serving his fifth term representing the district of Cleveland, Ohio, in the U.S. House of Representatives, is coming to the area as a guest of the local Freedom Rousers.

The event will be held on Monday, Oct. 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Wells High School Auditorium, located at 200 Sanford Road (Route 109) in Wells.

The format will be an open forum discussion on the topic, "Our Constitution: Can It Be Saved?"

Kucinich has long been an outspoken opponent of the Iraq war. Today, supporters view Kucinich as a prophet, citing his predictions that hundreds of billions of dollars would be wasted, countless lives lost and America's credibility in the world severely undermined. He has also been an outspoken critic of alleged secrecy and lying in the conduct of the war on terrorism and the war in Iraq resulting in the erosion of U.S. civil liberties.

"No people should be frightened into giving up their precious rights. Recent refusals by the Attorney General to disclose whether similar [surveillance] programs are being used against purely domestic communications should send a chill down all our spines," Kucinich is quoted as saying. "…We elect presidents, not kings, and no president is above a clearly written law expressly curbing his powers… To allow our Bill of Rights to be nullified without judicial supervision invites tyranny…"

Monday's forum invites open discussion, in this context, of current threats to the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

The free event is sponsored by The Freedom Rousers, a group of residents of Ogunquit, Wells and York who are concerned about the erosion of civil liberties guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States of America. Activities of the Freedom Rousers are intended to raise consciousness, motivate dialogue and create opportunities to supplant what the group's members describe as the current atmosphere of fear, suspicion and apathy with camaraderie, mutual respect and pursuit of liberty.

Kucinich's visit is co-sponsored by Seacoast Peace Response, Women in Black (Ogunquit, Wells, York), and the Grassroots Coalition to Restore Sanity in Government.
