York field hockey stays strong, 11-0

By Colleen Buckless

YORK - York High School field hockey continued their amazing season this past week with wins at Cape Elizabeth and at Yarmouth.

York traveled to the windy field at Cape Elizabeth last Wednesday, Sept. 27. For the first time all season, York found themselves down by one goal when Cape Elizabeth scored in the first half. Michaela Franey tied up the score later in the first half during a corner and York entered the half 1-1.

During the second half, Kirsten Weiner scored her first goal of the season with an assist by Lauren Coupal to put York up 2-1. Coupal later scored with an assist by Caitlin Keating for the last score of the day. York's aggressive play throughout the game made the 3 to 1 final possible.

York traveled to Yarmouth last Saturday, Sept. 30, for a game on the fast artificial surface of the host team. The change in surface proved to be no problem for York, though. Coupal scored first with an assist from Megan Yorke, followed by Kortnee Cribby, who scored with an assist by Franey. Coupal scored once again with an assist by Franey to put the Wildcats up 3-0. Yarmouth made the final goal of the half to put things at 3-1.

York came into the second half with a goal right away by Franey, assisted by Cribby, to go up 4-1, and Franey scored again during a breakaway with an assist by Coupal to close the day at 5-1.

This week brings York's final home games, against Greely on Tuesday, Oct. 3, and rival Wells, on Thursday, Oct. 5, on York's football field, under the lights at 6 p.m.

Scores were unavailable from Tuesday's game at press time, but Thursday's game should be competitive and a sight to watch.
