Local man pleads guilty to sexual assault charges

Kevin J. Perkins
YORK - A local man charged more than 18 months ago with sexually assaulting a young girl has pleaded guilty and will spend at least nine months in prison.

York Police Detective Thomas Cryan confirmed that Kevin J. Perkins, whose last known residence, according to police, was 280 Mountain Road in Cape Neddick, pleaded guilty to two counts of Class B felony unlawful sexual contact on Thursday, Sept. 28.

A guilty plea is equal to a conviction on the charges in question under Maine law, Cryan explained, and Perkins was subsequently sentenced to four years in prison, with all but nine months suspended. That prison term will be followed by three years of probation.

In addition, Cryan said, Perkins faces conditions of release that stipulate he must submit a DNA sample, attend substance abuse counseling, register as a sex offender and attend counseling, pay $1,500 in restitution to the victim and have no contact with the victim or with any children under the age of 16 years, except his own.

Perkins was in indicted back in 2005 on three counts of Class B unlawful sexual contact, including penetration, involving a minor under the age of 14.

At the time, Perkins was known as a resident of the Mountain Road address but listed his mailing address as a post office box in Ogunquit.

Cryan confirmed Perkins is currently incarcerated, adding police do not know where his permanent residence will be upon release, but that he will be required to register as a sex offender with law enforcement officials in any community where he resides.

Perkins' indictment and subsequent plea agreement came after an unidentified individual told York Police Department School Resource Officer Jamie Dodge that Perkins, then 25, had sexually assaulted a young girl between Dec. 1, 2004, and Jan. 31, 2005.
