Celebrate Harvestfest with the library
By Assistant Director Sudie Blanchard
YORK VILLAGE - The library will be welcoming everyone during York's 22nd annual Harvestfest celebration. On Friday, Oct, 13, a special Harvestfest children's story time at 10:30 a.m. will have a decided autumnal flavor. On Saturday, Oct. 14, the Friends of the Library will sponsor some fantastic Harvestfest specials in their gently-used book store, The Book Nook, and of course, the library will be open for its regular hours of operation to serve your library and information needs.
So when you've had enough kettle corn, onion blossoms, clam chowdah and blueberry cobbler and have made the rounds of the vendors' displays, remember - the library is always the place to be.
Come in and browse through a magazine or newspaper or access the Internet. York residents, while you're at the library, don't forget to borrow a book or two … or three!
ONGOING GENEALOGY WORKSHOP
If you are interested in investigating your family tree, you'll be glad to know that there is a group that meets at 1 p.m. in the Kennebunk Room on the first Wednesday of each month at the library. Headed by local genealogist Don Michel, this group is open to both beginning and experienced genealogical sleuths. This month, the meeting is today, Oct. 11.
ARTIST TALK THIS WEEK
This month and next, visitors will be able to see the watercolors of artist Fran Scully. A versatile painter, Fran has experimented with many painting and printing techniques and has found watercolor to be her preferred style. Inspiration for her seascapes comes from her love of the rugged Maine coast, and the delicacy and freshness of flowers in her paintings reveals her admiration for nature in all its forms. Fran will be sharing her thoughts about art at the next Artist's Talk by the fireplace at the library on Thursday, Oct. 12, at 6:30 p.m.
LIBRARY DISPLAYS
October 6 was "National Diversity Day." This month, the library will be recognizing diversity with an exhibit of books and other materials on that topic. The exhibit is co-sponsored with the York Diversity Forum, whose goals are to increase understanding and acceptance of people of different races, cultures, sexual orientations, religions, ages and abilities, and to reduce the incidence of prejudicial language and action in our community.
October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence has donated several books on that topic which will be on display, along with information about local organizations that are available to help.
Celebrate your right to read. Be sure to stop by the library and see the eye-catching Banned Books display mounted by Library Assistant Jeannine Means. Viewers will be amazed at the books that have been questioned over the years!
ART EXHIBITS
Fran Scully's watercolors are on display in the library during October and November.
York Art Association artist Alice B. Hogan's watercolors are on display in the Kennebunk Room. Subjects of her work include Maine seascapes and landscapes of Maine and the Southwest. Hogan has been a part-time resident of York since the late '50s. She spends the rest of the year in Maryland.
