OgunquitFest 2006 begins Oct. 20

Competition heats up for the third annual scarecrow contest as businesses prepare for OgunquitFest. Two contenders assembled their creations early as "Church Picnic" at Sanctuary on Shore Road and "The Haunted Gondola" at LaPizzeria on Main Street vie for early votes for the Best Scarecrow award.

Assembly of the popular scarecrow contest has already begun by many local businesses, and winners will be chosen by popular vote at the end of the festival. Ballot boxes are accessible at the Ogunquit Welcome Center on Main Street, Ogunquit Camera Shop on Shore Road and at the Village Food Market in Ogunquit Square.
The calendar of events includes, on Friday, Oct. 20, a ghostly walk through the streets of Ogunquit at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m., sponsored by the Norseman Resort with refreshments sponsored by Julie's Ristorante. Tours start at the Winn House on Obeds Lane. Children are admitted free with a $5 charge for adults. Bats in the Belfry Bonfire will be held at 9 p.m. on Ogunquit Beach, sponsored by Anchorage by the Sea.
Saturday, Oct. 21, features Monster Mall Marketplace from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dunaway Center, School Street; horse-drawn wagon rides from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., starting at Veteran's Park for $5 per person, and the Great Pumpkin Patch presentation from 10 a.m. to noon upstairs at the fire station, sponsored by Pink Blossoms Resort and Raspberri's Restaurant. The treasure hunt will be held at 1 p.m., sponsored by Kennebunk Savings Bank and People's Insurance at Winn House. Children's Halloween stories are at Raspberri's Restaurant at Gorges Grant on Main Street. Sponsored by Your Body Works, local storyteller Diana Abbott will tell stories of spooks and hauntings.
On Sunday, Oct. 22, Monster Mall Marketplace continues from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dunaway Center, with a costume parade from 11 a.m. to noon, sponsored by the Almost Home Inn Ogunquit. The parade will originate at the square in Ogunquit and travel to the Winn House. In case of rain, the event will occur upstairs at the fire station. A Post-parade reception at noon at the Winn House will feature treats for parade participants with refreshments sponsored by Huckleberry's Restaurant.
Sunday also features the "Out of your Gourd" race at 1 p.m. at the footbridge to the main beach. Gourds are $10 each or three for $20 and can be purchased at the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center, Ogunquit Camera Shop, Village Food Market, Spoiled Rotten or the OgunquitFest Monster Mall marketplace.
