YORK - The York girls' soccer team finished up the heart of their regular season this past week going 1-2, with a fortunate away win at Cape sandwiched between shutout losses to Yarmouth and Falmouth.

Heading into tonight's game at Wells, the Wildcats sit at 7-4-1, and while definitely playoff bound, Wally Caldwell's youngsters will be looking to recharge their sputtering offense in the final week before going into the post season.

Yarmouth 1, York 0

At York last Tuesday, Oct. 3, the Clippers took revenge for their earlier home defeat at the hands of the Wildcats. After a scoreless first half in which the play was back and forth, Yarmouth turned up the pressure in the second half. Ten minutes in, the Clippers began to control the midfield and set up scoring chances, just missing on a sharp header off a corner. Three minutes later, Brooke Simpson came up with a huge diving save off a blast from 18 yards to keep York in it. Five minutes after that it was Simpson again, this time coming out hard off her line to clear the ball away ahead of the charging Yarmouth striker. And at the 19-minute mark, it was Simpson again coming up with another big clear against the Clipper attack.

But at seven minutes left, Yarmouth finally broke through, splitting the York defenders with relentless pressure up the middle, and Jennifer Senecal drilling home the shot past Simpson for the lead and the game, 1-0. Simpson was the star of the game in this losing cause.

York 2, Cape Elizabeth 0

York got the lucky bounces it needed on a lumpy and windblown field on Thursday, Oct. 5, at Cape when they benefited from two improbable goals en route to a 2-0 win.

Midfielder Stephanie Plaisted was credited for the first goal on an assist from Morgan Taylor with a score off a scramble from in front 10 minutes into the first half. Outside mid Emily Boone added another in the final minute of the half when she launched a high ball from 30 yards that the wind took and dropped in behind the Cape keeper, who was caught way off her line and could not recover.

Defensively, York got back to their reliable selves, with backs Meredith Reid, Michaela Schilling and Kate Rasche, along with stopper/midfielder Emma Clark, all showing good form, and keeper Simpson putting in another solid game between the posts. In the midfield, Plaisted and Kiah Voyer-Colbath directed solid control and good passing on the thick and lumpy grass. Getting some quality minutes up top, sophomore Hannah Carey caused pressure in the second half to keep Cape on their heels. This was a physical game on a bad field, and York did well to play in control.

Falmouth 2, York 0

The Lady Yachtsmen remained undefeated at last Saturday's game at York, scoring early and late to take both games from York for the season. Putting in an early goal by Lindsay Lanouette just four minutes in, Falmouth held off a better organized York team for the rest of the half. While York was able to make several good build-ups, they remained unable to convert and the half ended at 1-0.

Despite continued good play by York, Falmouth closed the door on this game with 15 minutes left when they emerged with the ball after scrum in the York corner and passed out front to an unmarked Sarah Bachman who drilled in low to make the final 2-0.

York travels to Wells tonight, Wednesday, Oct. 11, in search of the scoring touch, game time 6 p.m.
