THE LIGHT OF HOPE BURNS BRIGHT. There's a saying about Hospice bringing the light of hope, but this weekend it was local resident Walter Woods, along with his family, friends and neighbors, bringing the light of hope to the all-volunteer Hospice of York as well as the York Community Food Pantry, in the form of the annual beach bonfire, fundraiser and food drive on Long Sands Beach. Hundreds of local residents and visitors gathered on the beach throughout the evening on Saturday, Oct. 7, buying raffle tickets and making donations to both organizations, and even stuffing a truck with nonperishable goods for the Food Pantry. Woods confirmed Tuesday that volunteers served food to about 400 people and those funds, with the raffles, raised about $3,800 for Hospice of York. Visitors to the event also donated about $200 to the Food Pantry in addition to bringing nonperishable goods to fill the truck. Residents of all ages who stayed through the sunset hours and watched the moon rise over the Nubble while enjoying the bonfire, live music and the food were quick to praise Woods for his efforts and to say this is one local event they plan to attend every year. Woods, however, gave all the praise to the town for allowing the event, as well as to local residents for making it a success. As he put it, "It's not one guy. It's the whole community."

It's that time of year again. With the Nov. 7 election now less than a month away, local officials have been taking a close look at the effort to get the citizen-petitioned Taxpayer Bill of Rights on the ballot, and what they've found is a New York City billionaire. The Cape Neddick Light, which may well be the town's most famous landmark, has caught the eye of a national door and window company and is a finalist in a nationwide search for a special lighthouse in need of renovation. In their effort to bring a swimming facility to the town's Bog Road land, Ann Grinnell and Kathryn Strand of the Swim Center of Southern Maine have received a vote of confidence from Gov. John Baldacci. It seems that the whole town turned out. Planning Department Monthly Report: By Town Planner Steve Burns
