Doris Lucas
YORK - Doris W. Lucas, 93, formerly of York Village, died, Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006, of pancreatic cancer at the Hospice House in Concord, N.H.

She was born in Otisfield, daughter of Roscoe and Flora Belle (Skillings) Whitman. Mrs. Lucas was a graduate of Berwick High School in Berwick, and Exeter Hospital School of Nursing, Exeter, N.H. She was superintendent of the Mitchell Memorial Hospital, operated by Rockingham County in Brentwood, N.H., before joining the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in 1940.

Mrs. Lucas served in the Pacific Theater in World War II, leaving from New York in January, 1942, aboard a ship that was part of the first convoy to leave the East Coast for the Pacific Theater after war was declared by the U.S. against Japan. She served over seas in New Caledonia, New Hebrides, New Zealand and at Rhoades General Hospital in Utica, N.Y., before separating from the Army as a captain in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in December, 1945.

After the war, she worked at Exeter Hospital and York Hospital.

Mrs. Lucas is survived by her son John E. Lucas and his wife Tricia H. Lucas of Manchester, N.H., and by her grandchildren, Joshua P. Lucas and Anne E. Lucas, both of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Pauline Guptill of North Berwick, and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, James H. Lucas, died in 1970.

The funeral service for Mrs. Lucas will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, in the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Interment will follow in First Parish Cemetery with a reception in the Fellowship Hall in the First Parish Congregational Church.
