Headlines from York and Ogunquit, Maine

AN UNFORGETTABLE HARVESTFEST. Over three days this past weekend, Oct. 13 through 15, York came alive with the sounds of music, conversation, horses' hoofs pounding the pavement, laughter and the sizzle of food being cooked out in the open air as the Greater York Region Chamber of Commerce's 22nd Annual Harvestfest celebration turned York Village and York Beach into an old-fashioned marketplace. Complete with entertainment that ranged from area musicians performing out and about in York Village to a Native American Pow Wow in York Beach, and even a chance to step into the past with Old York Historical Society, attendees and organizers all agreed this year's was the best Harvestfest on record. Greater York Region Chamber of Commerce Vice President Carrie Eisner confirmed that this year broke all prior records, with crowds numbering approximately 40,000 at the weekend-long event. Pictured here are Vince and Susan Thelin of Rockin' Horse Stables in Kennebunkport at the reins of their Belgian draft horses, Red and Doc. Wagon rides with Red and Doc through York Village were among the favorite activities at Harvestfest for children of all ages this year. For more on Harvestfest 2006, see our

From state, county and gubernatorial races to local zoning questions to a citizen-petitioned initiative to change the way budgeting is handled, area residents have plenty of reasons to head to the polls on Nov. 7 or take out absentee ballots for this year's mid-term election.
The Ogunquit Board of Selectmen was scheduled to meet last night, Tuesday, Oct. 17, to discuss sending a letter to York Superintendent of Schools Dr. Henry Scipione regarding the York School Department's recent offer to accept Ogunquit students on a tuition basis.
