Gwen Wagor: A Garden on Paper on display at Heartwood College of Art through Nov. 3. The Prints of Peggy Bacon at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art through Oct. 31. Margaret Frances (Peggy) Bacon (1895-1987) received The Gold Medal for Graphic Art from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Bacon's works are represented in numerous public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Portrait Gallery, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the OMAA. Stephen Bracciotti Benefit Art Auction will be held Nov. 4 at River Tree Center for the Arts in Kennebunk. As a result of an unexpected illness, Stephen, a York resident, has become disabled by progressive blindness. All proceeds from the auction of works by area artists will go to Stephen and his family to help with substantial medical expenses incurred this past year. York High School Concert and Jazz Band will be performing a "Tribute to Our Veterans" concert on Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. in the York High School Auditorium. The American Holistic Nurses Association will meet Nov 7 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Candleshop Inn in York Beach. The topic for discussion will be Chakra Balancing and the speaker will be Gina Rowland, a certified holistic health counselor. Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women, a nationally known non-profit organization, is looking for volunteers to assist victims of intimate partner violence. Volunteers are needed to cover the organization's toll-free crisis line and ull training is offered. You may answer calls right from your home on weekdays, nights, weekends and/or holidays. The training is 40 hours and will consist of online and teleconferencing sessions. Volunteers must have access to a computer with an Internet connection. Home Schooling Club offers a chance to meet, socialize, have fun and take field trips with others from the community who home school just like you! Attend all of the activities or simply pick and choose from the calendar of events and activities. No commitment is required and all home schooled children are welcome to attend with their families. October events include the Friday, Oct. 27, York's Costume Parade and Halloween Hop, beginning at Town Hall at 4:30 p.m. and ending at the York Public Library. If weather conditions are not suitable for any of the club's outside plans, meet at the library from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for games. November events include a tour of the York Community Service Association's Thrift Shop to learn about all of the wonderful ways YCSA helps community members all year long on Friday, Nov. 3, from 1 to 2 p.m. On Nov. 10, Nature Rocks from 1 to 2 p.m. at the White Pine Program located at 330 Mountain Road in Cape Neddick for a tour of this nature-based learning facility. On Nov. 17, from 1 to 3 p.m., meet at the York Public Library Children's Area for game time galore. Sunday, Nov. 19, come and help make a difference from 4 to 6 p.m. while joining volunteers from across the community at St. Christopher's Church working together with others from the community sorting items for York Community Service Association's annual Thanksgiving Food Baskets. Kindergym is offered by York Parks and Recreation Department and no pre-registration is required. The cost is $4 per child/$6 per family per visit. Kindergym will be held at our new location, Blueberry Hill, Route 1 York on Friday mornings from 9:30 - 10:15 am. This program is ongoing; come and join us any Friday. We're looking for children who are walking up to age 3 to bring their parents along to our Kindergym program! This is an opportunity for the parent and child to engage in activities geared toward coordination, mobility and large motor skill development. Music and Movement, a new monthly program for children ages 2 to 6, meets on the first Wednesday of each month in the Children's Room at the York Public Library. This free parent-child class, held from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m., and taught by Michelle Franey of South Berwick, will focus on developing both musical and social skills, with emphasis on moving to the beat and learning traditional songs. The International Women's Club of New England International Holiday Fair will be held at York Middle School on Saturday, Nov. 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is our largest fair ever and offers gifts from around the world, New England crafts, antiques and jewelry. The International Women's Club of New England is a group of 120 women from diverse backgrounds who raise money for charities for women and children.

Milk Masterpiece Carton Design Contest continues through Nov. 17. Garelick Farms is inviting young artists to create commemorative designs depicting "Why My School is Important to Me." Seven winning designs across seven states, including Maine, will be selected. The entry deadline is Nov. 17 and each contest winner will have his or her design featured on Garelick Farms cartons in early 2007 and receive a year's worth of Garelick Farms milk for his or her family. Ogunquit Heritage Museum's Fifth "Do You Remember?" is set for Oct. 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Ogunquit Baptist Church. This sharing of memories of Ogunquit will be specifically about the Ogunquit Playhouse, which will celebrate its 75th birthday next year. You are invited to share your recollections of the playhouse and its early days, the Manhattan Theatre Colony, and the actors, staff and management that have made the playhouse a success. Join the Friends of the Winn House and the Ogunquit Heritage Museum in the Community Room at the Ogunquit Baptist Church to hear stories about the good old days at the playhouse and contribute recollections of your own. The Pumpkin Patch at the York-Ogunquit United Methodist Church continues through Oct. 31, Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 12:30 to 5 p.m. The pumpkins are grown on a Navajo Reservation in New Mexico and proceeds from this event will benefit the Navajo Agricultural Products Industry and Navajo workers and UMCOR for Katrina recovery. Prices start as low as 50 cents and range up to $25 to $50 for the very large pumpkins. Weekend activities for the children include pumpkin painting, bean bag toss, storytelling and photographs.
St. George's Episcopal Church Outreach Program Benefit Auction will be held on Nov. 10 with the preview at 5:30 p.m. and the auction at 6:30 p.m. at Foster's Clambake Pavilion on Axholme Road. Tidewater School's Pumpkin Patch, where Seacoast families can enjoy hot mulled cider, crafts, harvest season decorations, storytelling and live music while they shop, is open daily from 8 a.m. until dark through Nov. 2. Each year, the Tidewater community receives a truckload of pumpkins grown on a Navajo Reservation in northwest New Mexico. The proceeds from the sale of the pumpkins, along with the sale of gourds, Indian corn, straw, corn stalks and other decorative items, will benefit both the Navajo and the Tidewater School. Bring the whole family to experience a variety of special activities each Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. through Oct. 28. There will be home baked goods and cider for sale along with face painting for the children in addition to scarecrow making and other children's crafts. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month continues through October, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services is reminding Maine women of the importance of regular screening for early detection of breast cancer. For women in need of financial assistance, the Maine CDC provides free breast and cervical health screenings. To qualify, a woman must be between 40 and 64 years old; meet certain income guidelines; have no medical insurance (including MaineCare and Medicare Part B), or have insurance which does not cover screening services. Coffee Shop at the Wells-Ogunquit Senior Center is open Monday through Friday, 9 to 11 a.m., serving regular or decaf coffee, pastries, Congdon's and Dunkin' Donuts, and their own blueberry muffins for $1.50. Thursday's Coffee Club occasionally has a guest speaker.
SUPPORT
Hospice of York's Living with Loss weekly bereavement support group is offered nearly continuously from now through the spring. There is no charge, and you need not have had a loved one serviced by hospice. Hospice of York encourages pre-registration; however, you may attend any or all of the classes as you see fit. The current session, facilitated by Mary Ellen Peterson and Linda Rees, continues on Thursdays, through Nov. 9. The three-week holiday session will be held on Nov. 30 and Dec. 7 and 14; t he winter session is set for Jan. 4 through 25, Feb. 1 through 22, and March 1 and 8, and the spring session will be held on March 29, April 5 through 26, and May 3 through 31. Support Victims of Domestic Violence by collecting old cell phones and ink jet cartridges and mailing them to the Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women free of charge. The Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women provides crisis intervention and support services to all victims of domestic violence and their families. Proceeds from this program will help the organization continue to provide services as well as support the 24-hour hotline. The York Hospital Breast Cancer Survivor Group, which meets the third Monday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ellis Conference Room at York Hospital, welcomes new members. Those who attend survivor groups cope better, heal more quickly and live longer. New members, whether or not their treatment was at York Hospital, are invited to come to the meetings and be with women who share their story. Friends are welcome too. During these meetings the members share information, coping tips and strategies, explore complimentary therapies, hear guest speakers, support each other, experience sisterhood, plan the Annual Walk for Hope and celebrate living.
