PREPARE TO BE SCARED. Ogunquit Performing Arts continues the 2006-2007 Classic Film Series season with Nosferatu at the Dunaway Center on Wednesday evening Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. There will be pre- and post-video discussions led by Norman Wilkinson of Ogunquit Performing Arts. This silent German film was made in 1922 as an adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, and is often considered the best of its kind. Director F.W. Murnau was denied the right to use the name "Dracula" by the author's widow, who ordered that all copies of the film negatives be destroyed. Murnau changed the name to "Nosferatu" and the name of the title character to Count Orlok, proceeded to make what has come to be considered a classic film of the silent film era, and managed to save some copies of the negatives. Bela Lugosi's Dracula is probably the most famous, but Max Schreck's interpretation of the vampire, pictured here, brought a sinister eerie presence to the role, an evil that has not been matched in succeeding versions. Stuart Nudelman, chairman of Ogunquit Performing Arts, invites all "to join us in being terrified this Halloween season as we enjoy this film classic."
