Ongoing and upcoming events at the library
YORK VILLAGE - Weekly programs for children at the York Public Library include Miss Kate's Infant Lap, Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.; Preschool Story Time, Thursdays at 10:30 a.m., and Toddler Story Time, Fridays at 10:30 a.m. Monthly programs for children include Making Music Monthly, the first Wednesday of each month from 10:15 to10:45 a.m.; Tactile Toddler Time, the second Tuesday of each month from 10:15 to10:45 a.m., and Art by the Pond, the third Tuesday of each month, from 10:15 to 11 a.m.Throughout the fall, the library is sponsoring two identical "Let's Talk About It" series on Jewish literature on Thursdays at 7 p.m. Both sections of this series are fully subscribed, but we are listing the dates and times of the remaining sessions so that attendees can find the information if needed.
Series A, with facilitator Michael Lee, includes "Out of Egypt" by Andre Acimen on Oct. 26, "The Centaur in the Garden" by M. Scliar on Nov. 16 and "Kaaterskill Falls" by Allegra Goodman on Dec. 7. Series B, with facilitator Sandell Morse, includes "Out of Egypt" by Andre Acimen on Nov. 9, "The Centaur in the Garden" by M. Scliar on Nov. 30 and "Kaaterskill Falls" by Allegra Goodman on Dec. 14.
On Friday, Oct. 27, continue celebrating at the library after the annual town Halloween Parade, which begins in front of Town Hall at 4 p.m. It's a great event that fills the library with ghosts, ghouls and other wonderfully costumed guests and their families.
On Friday, Nov. 3, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. the library plays host to the York Schools' sixth annual Family Literacy Fair. This year's theme, "This Land is Your Land," honors American life and culture. Join us for an evening of stories, songs, and activities celebrating what's uniquely U.S.
The Thursday, Nov. 2, Writers' Night will feature three authors reading from their work. Aine Greaney's short stories and personal essays have been published in many Irish and U.S. literary journals and anthologies. She has taught creative writing workshops and is a frequent and lively public speaker, she presents at colleges, libraries and arts venues. Martin Golman is a York writer with a new book called "Affirmative Reaction." Goldman has written four books including "Nat Turner and the Southampton Revolt of 1831," "John F. Kennedy: Portrait of a President," "Crazy Horse: War Chief of the Oglala Sioux" and "Richard M. Nixon: The Complex President." He has appeared on The O'Reilly Factor and Good Morning America and has written frequently for The Boston Globe, The Boston Herald and The Boston Phoenix. Norman Albeson, a prize winning poet and author, has also worked as a journalist, editorial columnist, speech writer and press secretary to a U.S. senator, and a public radio announcer. He is currently working on a volume of short stories as well as a book based on wartime stories.

On Tuesday, Nov. 7, and Tuesday, Nov. 14, beginning at noon, join us for "From the Front," a Brown Bag Lunch series in honor of Veterans Day. Nov. 7 will feature "Letters Home: Stories of Two Civil War Soldiers." OYHS Executive Director Scott Stevens will read excerpts from letters home by two York men who volunteered for the First Maine Cavalry. Nov. 14 will feature "Remembrances of Wartime" with a panel of United States World War II veterans and homefront supports who will share stories and experiences.
These Brown Bag Lectures are co-sponsored by the York Public Library and the Old York Historical Society. Bring a lunch to enjoy during the program. Old York Historical Society will supply a beverage. The program is free, but donations are always gratefully accepted.
