Three classic comedies coming to town on Nov. 4
OGUNQUIT - In a program of works by three favorite internationally-known writers, George Bernard Shaw, Dorothy Parker, and Anton Chekhov, Ogunquit Performing Arts intends to have everyone sitting at the edge of their seats and howling with laughter. The first is "How He Lied to Her Husband," by George Bernard Shaw, 1856-1950. Shaw was an Irish dramatist, literary critic, socialist spokesman and a leading figure in the 20th -century theater. Shaw was a freethinker, defender of women's rights and advocate of equality of income. In 1925, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Shaw accepted the honor but refused the money. "How He Lied to Her Husband" is a humorous situation comedy in which the wife of a coarse businessman is courted by a young poet.
"Here We Are" is by Dorothy Parker, 1893-1967, an American writer and poet best known for her caustic wit, wisecracks and sharp eye for 20th-century urban foibles. She was theatre critic for Vanity Fair and an esteemed member of the Algonquin Round Table. "Here We Are" takes place on a train where newlyweds discuss their first day of marriage.
"The Boor" is by Anton Chekhov, 1872-1937, a Russian dramatist, short story writer and novelist who was known for his poignant and often funny vision of humanity. In "The Boor," a widow is visited by "a boor" to whom her dead husband owed money, which he tries to collect.
