Selectmen name the dates for Ogunquit Recycles Week

By C. Ayn Douglass

OGUNQUIT - All five selectmen signed a proclamation at their regular meeting last week to declare Nov. 8 through 15 Ogunquit Recycles Week.

The town observes the effort in conjunction with the Maine Recycles Week in November to draw attention to the benefit to the town of a vibrant recycling effort. Maine has made the commitment to reduce, reuse and recycle for 17 years and Ogunquit's Recycling Committee plans to have its members active during that week to encourage all residents to recycle as much of their waste as possible.

Committee Chairwoman Nancy Fording said this year the idea is to have the five members of the committee visible to really focus on recycling and encourage a commitment to assure that the effort will continue to grow and to make sure the proclamation goes into as many hands as possible.

Recycling saves natural resources and reduces waste and pollution, and Ogunquit residents and businesses have actively participated. Restaurateur and Selectwoman Jackie Bevins noted that both of her restaurants have reduced the amount of trash they send to the transfer station by recycling.

The town of Ogunquit is reducing its amount of waste year-by-year through strong participation in recycling efforts, according to the proclamation, thereby reducing the dollar amount spent for tipping fees.
