Celebrate Adopt-A-Dog Month with the Animal Welfare Society

YORK - Scholastic's beloved Clifford The Big Red Dog® and the Animal Welfare Society have joined forces to help find homes for homeless dogs during the month of October.

Clifford is the official national "spokesdog" this year for American Humane's Adopt-A-Dog Month®.

Locally, the West Kennebunk-based Animal Welfare Society will be observing this month with special dog adoption events and activities, so stop by to meet some of the dogs and puppies of all breeds and sizes waiting for loving families.

The shelter is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for adoptions and is now open until 7 p.m. on Thursday to allow you extra time to visit the pups - and the cats and other critters as well, of course.

"The Animal Welfare Society has some great canines just waiting to find themselves good human families to belong to. After all, they are man's best friend, and what better way to save a dog's life than by adopting one from AWS?" said Katie Dolloff, AWS program coordinator.

For people who already enjoy the daily rewards of dog companionship, the AWS, Clifford and American Humane encourage all dog owners to celebrate Adopt-A-Dog Month in other ways, such as contributing time, money or needed supplies to the AWS efforts to improve the lives of animals in the York County area; equipping all pets with a reliable form of ID, as only about 15 to 20 percent of dogs who end up in animal shelters are ever reunited with their families and a reliable ID is their "ticket" home, and spaying or neutering their dogs as there are already too many animals and not enough loving homes to go around.

"Join us and together we can make October a great month for shelter dogs," Dolloff said.
