A REASON TO SMILE. Hospice of York Director Dee Bickmore and Board President Hannah Rothermel were all smiles last week, as local resident and business owner Walter Woods presented them with a ceremonial check for $3,676, the proceeds from the recent bonfire and raffle on Long Sands Beach to benefit the all-volunteer Hospice of York. Woods said he plans to keep on hosting the annual event with the support of family and friends, as well as the town, to benefit organizations throughout the community and beyond.

MAKING A DREAM COME TRUE. Local resident Deanna Bock and her grandchildren embarked this year on their fourth community service project, writing a book to raise money for a worthy cause. Sales of the book, entitled "Vacation with Nana: From the Gulf of Maine to the Gulf of Mexico," garnered $1,000 for this year's recipient, the Maine Chapter Dream Factory. Pictured are Lauren Layton, 8, presenting the check to Kristen Hathorne, secretary to the Dream Factory, with Andrew LaMonica, 12, Anthony LaMonica, 14, Nolan Layton, 3, and Ethan Layton, 5. Block credited the generosity of the community, friends, family and summer visitors. The funds will help create a special moment for a critically ill child. The Dream Factory Maine Chapter is a non-profit organization that grants the dreams of seriously and chronically ill children ages 3 through 18.
