ART, EXHIBITS, MUSIC, THEATRECasting Call. Bob Allen and Tom Craig of White Crow Productions have announced they will be shooting a television series set in Maine and fully shot in Maine. The original pilot will start shooting once all principal talent is cast. Maureen Gorman and Karen True have joined on to do the casting. Gorman and True are experienced casting directors who have cast many national commercials, feature films, episodic television and reality shows. Anyone interested in being considered should come to the open call on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Howard Johnson's Hotel, Main Street, South Portland. Gwen Wagor: A Garden on Paper on display at Heartwood College of Art through Nov. 3. Wagor, 82, is a well-known watercolorist who has been active in the local art community for years as a gallery owner, teacher and artist. Louise Gerstenblatt Originals at the Candleshop Inn in York Beach on Saturday, Nov. 18. A pre-Holiday showing of Louise Gerstenblatt's beautiful handcrafted original jewelry, For the last ten years, she's taken many classes with various metal artists and discovered that she had some real talent for designing and executing her ideas. Her work has been displayed in galleries and at art shows. A relative newcomer to York, Louise designs and creates jewelry from her home studio. At 80, she feels blessed to have met so many other wonderful jewelry artists and has found a new direction that stimulates her to keep learning. "One, Two, Three" at Heartwood College of Art is a silent auction of high-quality artwork to benefit the college. The auction will feature 123 pieces of art with starting bids of $123 that may be bid up in $10 increments. Bidders simply purchase a bidding number, view the artwork to be auctioned, and leave a bid (or phone one in to Heartwood) on their favorite pieces. Stephen Bracciotti Benefit Art Auction will be held Nov. 4 at River Tree Center for the Arts in Kennebunk. As a result of an unexpected illness, Stephen, a York resident, has become disabled by progressive blindness. All proceeds from the auction of works by area artists will go to Stephen and his family to help with substantial medical expenses incurred this past year. York High School Concert and Jazz Band will be performing a "Tribute to Our Veterans" concert on Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. in the York High School Auditorium. The American Holistic Nurses Association will meet Nov 7 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Candleshop Inn in York Beach. Catapult, the Seacoast's first networking group specifically dedicated to young professionals, announces its launch with a premiere event on Nov. 8 at The Sports Page in nearby Portsmouth, N.H. Catapult is a nonprofit organization, and membership is free. Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women, a nationally known non-profit organization, is looking for volunteers to assist victims of intimate partner violence. Volunteers are needed to cover the organization's toll-free crisis line and ull training is offered. You may answer calls right from your home on weekdays, nights, weekends and/or holidays. Kindergym is offered by York Parks and Recreation Department and no pre-registration is required. The cost is $4 per child/$6 per family per visit. Kindergym is held at Blueberry Hill on Route 1 on Friday mornings from 9:30 - 10:15 a.m. This program is ongoing. We're looking for children who are walking up to age 3 to bring their parents along to our Kindergym program! This is an opportunity for the parent and child to engage in activities geared toward coordination, mobility and large motor skill development. Music and Movement, a new monthly program for children ages 2 to 6, meets on the first Wednesday of each month in the Children's Room at the York Public Library. Girl Scout Skating Party. Gundalow Service unit (Kittery, Eliot, York and South Berwick) is having a skating party for Girl Scouts and their families on Nov. 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Roller Skate Newington. We are asking everybody to bring an item for a birthday party, in honor of Juliette Low, whose birthday is on Oct. 31. All of the donations will be divided between the food pantries and homeless shelters so those kids can have birthday parties, too.
Hospice of York Candlelight Service will celebrate the lives of those we've loved and lost. A special candlelight service of remembrance with music provided by Gina Branagan Connolly, Richard Leigh and Todd Richard will take place on Sunday, Nov. 19, from 2 to 2:45 p.m. at the First Parish Church. Milk Masterpiece Carton Design Contest continues through Nov. 17. Garelick Farms is inviting young artists to create commemorative designs depicting "Why My School is Important to Me." Seven winning designs across seven states, including Maine, will be selected. The entry deadline is Nov. 17 and each contest winner will have his or her design featured on Garelick Farms cartons in early 2007 and receive a year's worth of Garelick Farms milk for his or her family. Tidewater School's Pumpkin Patch, where Seacoast families can enjoy hot mulled cider, crafts, harvest season decorations, storytelling and live music while they shop, is open daily from 8 a.m. until dark through Nov. 2. Each year, the Tidewater community receives a truckload of pumpkins grown on a Navajo Reservation in northwest New Mexico. The proceeds from the sale of the pumpkins, along with the sale of gourds, Indian corn, straw, corn stalks and other decorative items, will benefit both the Navajo and the Tidewater School. Bring the whole family to experience a variety of special activities each Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. through Oct. 28. There will be home baked goods and cider for sale along with face painting for the children in addition to scarecrow making and other children's crafts. The York High School Annual Poinsettia Sale is being sponsored once again by the York High School Music Boosters. Orders will be taken beginning Monday, Nov. 6, continuing through Tuesday, Nov. 28. Hospice of York's Living with Loss weekly bereavement support group is free of charge, and you need not have had a loved one serviced by Hospice. Hospice of York encourages pre-registration; however, you may attend any or all of the classes as you see fit. The current session, facilitated by Mary Ellen Peterson and Linda Rees, continues on Thursdays, through Nov. 9. The three-week holiday session will be held on Nov. 30 and Dec. 7 and 14; t he winter session is set for Jan. 4 through 25, Feb. 1 through 22, and March 1 and 8, and the spring session will be held on March 29, April 5 through 26, and May 3 through 31. Support Victims of Domestic Violence by collecting old cell phones and ink jet cartridges and mailing them to the Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women free of charge. The Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women provides crisis intervention and support services to all victims of domestic violence and their families. Proceeds from this program will help the organization continue to provide services as well as support the 24-hour hotline. The York Hospital Breast Cancer Survivor Group, which meets the third Monday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ellis Conference Room at York Hospital, welcomes new members. Those who attend survivor groups cope better, heal more quickly and live longer. New members, whether or not their treatment was at York Hospital, are invited to come to the meetings and be with women who share their story. Friends are welcome too. During these meetings the members share information, coping tips and strategies, explore complimentary therapies, hear guest speakers, support each other, experience sisterhood, plan the Annual Walk for Hope and celebrate living.
