Help the troops this holiday season
CAPE NEDDICK - York's own Veterans of Foreign Wars Boardman Ellis Post 6977 is anything but a stranger to public service. In fact, the post has taken first place in the Community Service in Support of the Troops/Families category statewide for three years in a row.
This year, the post is no less committed to helping those men and women deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan and other locations, but Service Officer Richard Filliettaz has announced the VFW will be using a different approach.
For the holidays this year, Post 6977 will be sending phone cards to the troops.
"We will not be sending homemade cookies for the holidays," Filliettaz announced recently. "We are still sending packages containing toiletry articles, stationery items and individually wrapped snack items."
Filliettaz noted the items needed this year include overseas phone cards, stationary, pens, pencils, pre-moistened wipes, toothbrushes and toothpaste, sunscreen, lip balm, deodorant, shaving supplies, foot powder, socks, fingernail clippers, combs, toilet paper, sanitary supplies, flea collars, bug repellant, videos and DVDs, dry soup packets, snack bars, beef jerky or pepperoni sticks, gum, sports drink mix, magazines, local newspapers, playing cards, donations for postage, letters and prayers.
The post assists troops from Wells, Moody, Ogunquit and York.
All items may be dropped off at Eldredge Lumber & Hardware, VFW Post 6977 and York Federal Credit Union.
In addition to assisting the troops, VFW Post 6977 also has an event planned closer to home on Veteran's Day, which is Saturday, Nov. 11.
The post members will be disposing of worn United States flags properly in a ceremony at the post's location in Cape Neddick on Route 1-A.
