Celebrate the holidays and more at the York Public Library

By Sudie Blanchard
Assistant Director

YORK - Thanksgiving is here, and with it begins the annual holiday festivities that make York such a wonderful place to be.

Visit the library frequently during this special time of year. Of course, we'll have some special events, but the library is also just a special place to be.

THANKSGIVING HOURS

The library will close at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 22, and will be closed on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 23 and 24, in observance of Thanksgiving. We will be open regular hours on Saturday, Nov. 25. The library staff wishes our patrons and their families a Happy Thanksgiving!

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

York officially begins its holiday observance with the Festival of Lights. The festival is held annually on the first Saturday of December to give thanks to our community for making York the delightful place it is and to celebrate the warmth and tradition of the New England Holiday season. The list of events throughout town is extensive. You may view the whole list at http://www.oldyork.org/events_pages/events_programs.htm or see next week's edition of The Independent for full details.

The following events will take place at the library on Saturday, Dec. 2.

Breakfast with Santa, co-sponsored with York Parks and Recreation Department, 8 to 10 a.m.

The Festival of Gingerbread Houses begins at 9 a.m. This year's winners will be announced at 1 p.m. The display will continue at the library until Dec. 12.

Here comes Santa Claus! Have your picture taken with Santa by the library fireplace. Sponsored by RE/MAX Realty One, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The York Public Library Festival of Lights Film Extravaganza - seven short holiday-themed cartoons will be shown: 11 a.m. A Charlie Brown Christmas (25 min.) and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (22 min); noon: Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer (47 min) and Mickey's Good Deed (8 min.), and 1 p.m.: Pluto's Christmas Tree (7 min.), Mickey's Christmas Carol (26 min.) and Frosty the Snowman (22 min.).

Visit the Book Nook, the gently-used book store run by the Friends of the York Library, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You are sure to find some holiday bargains.

WRITERS' EVENT

Friday, Dec. 8, from noon to 1:30 p.m., join a Connecticut mystery writer for a workshop on mystery writing, "Getting Started on Your Mystery Novel."

Susan Froetschel, author of "Interruptions" and "Alaska Gray," has taught writing at Yale and journalism at Southern Connecticut State University. Any writer can get started on a mystery novel. Practical writing exercises will show how one tiny idea, expressed in a single paragraph, can lead to a novel; how setting and themes influence plot and characters, and how writers can create intriguing characters from the everyday world.

The workshop will also offer plenty of tips on the process of writing.
