OGUNQUIT - Ogunquit Performing Arts' Classic Film Series will continue with the showing of "The Red Shoes," the 1948 British Technicolor epic widely acclaimed as the greatest dance film in history.

The showing is set for Wednesday, Dec. 13, at the Dunaway Center at 7 p.m.

Ogunquit Performing Arts continues the 2006-2007 Classic Film Series season with "The Red Shoes" as well as a pre- and post-video discussion led by Stuart Nudelman of Ogunquit Performing Arts.

The ballet "The Red Shoes" roughly follows the Hans Christian Anderson story.

The film intricately weaves backstage life with the thrill of performance as a young ballerina, Moira Shearer, is torn between two forces: the composer who loves her - Marius Goring - and the impresario determined to fashion her into a great dancer, Anton Walbrook.

The star of this 1948 film is Moira Shearer, who movie viewers describe as a ravishing beauty and magnificent prima ballerina whose performance in this film is considered spectacular.

What makes "The Red Shoes" extraordinary, however, is that not only does it have incredible performances by several of the premiere and most legendary ballet dances or its year, but also great acting.

Over time, "The Red Shoes" has become one of the highest-earning British films of all time and garnered Oscars for Best Musical Score of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture and Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, as well as nominations for Best Picture, Best Writing, Motion Picture Story and Best Film Editing.

Don't miss "The Red Shoes," the fourth in the 2006-07 Classic Film Series at the Dunaway Center on School Street in Ogunquit at 7 p.m. on Dec. 13. There is plenty of free parking and admission is free.
