Get started on your mystery novel at the library

YORK VILLAGE - Join mystery author Susan Froetschel at another in the series of Brown Bag Lunch programs at the York Public Library on Dec. 8 from noon to 1:30 p.m. to "Find the Mystery Novel in Your Life."

This workshop will explore how anyone can write a mystery novel. Offering practical exercises and tips on the process of writing, Froetschel will reveal how one small idea can lead to a novel, how setting and themes influence plot and character and how intriguing characters are created in everyday situations.

Froetschel is the author of two mystery books, "Interruptions" and "Alaska Gray." Both mysteries focus on the shortsighted development of wilderness areas as well as the current trend of medicating children to make them compliant in school.

In "Interruptions," a mother battles the school district over medicating her son, labeled ADHD, amid environmental controversy and a murder investigation.

The mysterious death of a college student in "Alaska Gray" leads to the uncovering of an environmental scam that someone will kill to keep quiet.

Froetschel teaches writing at Yale University and Southern Connecticut State University. She was a reporter and photographer for five years at the Daily Sentinel in Sitka, Alaska. A former copy editor with Esquire, Self and House Beautiful magazines, Froetschel has written for a variety of magazines and newspapers on health, environment and business issues. She has hosted writing workshops at the Hartford, New Haven and Avon libraries in Connecticut, offering advice for those who want to start a mystery novel.
