Dorothy Griffin

YORK BEACH - Dorothy C. ( Hanlon ) Griffin, 72, of Burlington, Mass., and York Beach, passed away on Dec. 3, 2006 at York Hospital with her loving children by her side.

She was born on Jan. 3, 1934, in the "Kerry Corner" section of Cambridge, Mass., and was the youngest daughter of Elizabeth and Edward Hanlon. She attended St. Paul's School in Cambridge.

She married John F. Griffin in 1959 and moved to Burlington as a new bride and lived there the remainder of her life. She worked in various jobs in the unemployment office for 30 years until her retirement in 2003.

She did some traveling in her younger days cross country and in Mexico and Quebec.

She was much more of a homebody, splitting her time between Burlington and York Beach. The highlight of her summer was opening the cottage up in May. She enjoyed her longtime neighbors coming by for a chat. She loved lobster rolls and Nubble Light.

She was an avid crossword puzzler. She enjoyed reading and especially crime mysteries. John Grisham was her favorite novelist. She loved to play Parchesi with her family. She loved shopping for things for her grandchildren. Christmas was her favorite holiday, and she would often start her holiday shopping in July.

Her five grandchildren were the joy of her life. She loved them very much and looked forward to spending time with them, and when she wasn't with them she was telling people about them.

During her retirement she enjoyed special trips to Disney World, Rome, a Rhine river cruise and a trip to Edinburgh, Scotland.

She will be best remembered for her sense of humor and quick wit, independent spirit and her kind and caring nature.

She was predeceased by her husband, John F. Griffin, Sr.; her sisters Francis Bonner and Agnes Hanlon, and one brother, Robert.

She is survived by her daughter Beth Murphy and her husband Patrick of York and her son John Griffin and his wife Claire of Concord, Mass. She is also survived by her five grandchildren Derek and Mairead Murphy of York and John, Hannah and Thomas Griffin of Concord.

Calling hours were held Tuesday, Dec. 5, at Edward O'Sullivan Funeral Home in Burlington, Mass. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated this morning, Wednesday, Dec. 6, at St. Malachy's in Burlington, Mass., with interment to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
