Lady Wildcats basketball prepares for new season
By Stan Ross
YORK - Veteran York High School Girls' Basketball Coach Rick Clark is entering his 25th season with the same enthusiasm he always has.Despite losing eight seniors from last year's playoff team, Clark said after last Saturday's scrimmage, "We expect to make the playoffs again and our goal is to be seeded in the top six for tournament time."
Clark announced that, "My tri-captains, all seniors with experience on last year's varsity, will be Stephanie Plaisted, Morgan Taylor and Jenna Yeomalikas."
Also returning is senior Kristen Raymond.
Moving up from a very successful junior varsity team are seniors Kortnee Cribby, Brittany Barrett and Sharon Ehret.
Juniors moving up from JV are Haley Westman, Stephanie Hartman and Brittany Bracy.
Two sophomores with plenty of JV time last year are Meredith Reid and Lanny Yeomelakis.
New to York this season is transfer student Kim Rigano from Acton-Boxboro, Mass.
Clark added, "We scrimmaged last week, Friday and Saturday, in the Scarborough Red Storm Turkey Trot against some top teams and we know we have a ways to go. The pre-season is a place for learning. We open our regular season on the road at Yarmouth on Saturday, Dec. 9, with a 7 p.m. start, and then on the road again next Tuesday at Poland Regional."
Based on last year's performance, and the number of players returning, Clark figures that Lake Region, Greely and Gray-New Gloucester will be the teams to beat.
York will be in action for two and three nights a week from this weekend until the regular season ends against with Wells on Feb. 8.
York will also be competing in a three day Christmas tournament at Gorham on Dec.27, 28 and 29.
