Headlines from York and Ogunquit, Maine

LET THERE BE LIGHTS. The 14th Annual Festival of Lights Celebration brought the spirit of the holidays to life - and into light - throughout York Village on Saturday, Dec. 2. With favorite traditions from festivals past and brand new events for this year's celebration, those who braved the chill to take part in the daylong festivities had nothing but praise for the Old York Historical Society, York Parks and Recreation and the many individuals, groups and businesses that came together to make the event, and its parade, a success. Pictured here, Santa and Mrs. Claus take a ride in a reindeer-drawn open sleigh along York Street during the Festival of Lights Parade. Members of York High School's brand new Shtick Happens Players are gearing up for two very special performances this weekend in honor of longtime local teacher Jack Hoyt, who is battling leukemia. Pictured are members of the troupe, including Jhames Steinsiek and Candace Yorston (foreground), taking part in an improvised scene. Read story.

More than 20 years ago, John Clancy helped make it legal for other surfers to use the entire beach beyond the summer months. If Jack Hoyt's health allowed him to attend the upcoming Shtick Happens Players Improv Night, he would be right in the front row, laughing out loud. The Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring its last big event of the year this weekend as the community celebrates Christmas by the Sea on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 8 through 10. The Ogunquit Planning Board will hold a special forum on zoning at 6 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 11, prior to its regularly scheduled meeting at 7 p.m.
