On the road again

The 225 members of the York High School Choral Program, along with nearly 1,000 of their loyal supporters, turned out for another in a long list of memorable holiday concerts this past Monday. Always remembered for the quality of their performances, this year's concert will be remembered for another reason as well. Specifically, where it was held. And in case anybody has not been following the path of our wandering youth musicians, this year they held their annual York High School Holiday Concert at the Portsmouth High School Auditorium. In New Hampshire. And they did this for one simple reason - because there is not a facility that can house them here.

Truth be told, it did not deter them. There they were, all of them with smiles, and poise, and confidence, and talent, their directors proud of them all, knowing and appreciating that these students would do their best whatever the venue, whatever the circumstances.

No, it did not deter them, but among the nearly 1,000 York citizens who were there to watch them you would have been hard pressed to find a one who did not have, in the back of their conscience somewhere, a nagging discordant note reminding them that something was not right here. That while these students, and these directors, have clearly done their best by us no matter what, we are, when you get right down to it, unable to look them back in the eye and know we have done our best by them.

This is, admittedly, a difficult problem to solve. But its inherent difficulties don't negate the need to address it. Fortunately, there are many good people still working on a solution to this, and with a proper commitment things may still come together. Let's hope so. Because no matter where we came down on this issue last May, these are still our children and grandchildren, and they are our responsibility, not those of the good people of Portsmouth who were kind enough to take them in this year.
