Our wonderful volunteers

By York Public Library Staff

YORK VILLAGE - This week we decorated cookies for our volunteers who work in the library each week.

Kathleen purchased the cookies from her favorite bakery in Kennebunk and designed "Happy Holidays" labels; Sudie prepared the royal icing; Jeanine helped with the decoration, and Robert wrote in our volunteers' names in attractive script on the labels. Frank and Kate sampled a few to be sure they were up to our high standards.

We also prepared a basket of goodies for our many Adopt-a-Shelvers and "Friends." All of which is our personal effort to recognize and thank our volunteers for their support that helps us to provide excellent library service to our community.

Our volunteers, Adopt-a-Shelvers and the "Friends of the Library" who run the Book Nook, constitute the "village" it takes to make the York Public Library a vibrant center of reading and learning.

Volunteers check out books, re-shelve items, process materials, inform people that requested books have arrived and prepare crafts for story times.

Adopt-a-Shelf volunteers keep our shelves in order and volunteer parents provide enriching monthly children's programs including: Tactile Toddler Activities, Art by the Pond, Making Music Monthly and Babies, Boppies and Books (a parent book discussion series).

Our "Friends" sponsor programs, such as discounted museum passes, and fund computer upgrades and replacements.

So volunteers - we think you are the best and look forward to seeing you at the library so that we can thank you in person and wish you each a happy holiday season.

Since last July, volunteers have recorded 926 hours of service, or about 185 hours a month. That's pretty remarkable!
