Lady Wildcats lose at Fryeburg,
73-50
By Stan Ross
YORK - Last Saturday night, Dec. 16, York Lady Wildcats basketball (1-3) took the long journey to Kennet, N.H., to face the undefeated Fryeburg Academy Lady Raiders (4-0).York opened strong and trailed by just one, 17-16, at the end of the first period. Fryeburg had lost their home gym in an arson fire in the fall of 2005 and will not be able to play on campus until the 2007/8 season.
But the Lady Raiders proved they knew the Kennet court better than the Lady Wildcats.
Sophomore Laney Yeomelakis led the York scorers with 13 points but Fryeburg was led by Hennessy with a game high 26. York trailed after a high scoring first half 38-31 but then the lady Raiders pulled away and outscored York 35-19 in the second half to win by the final score of 73-50.

Rangers upset Lady Wildcats, 62-50
Last Thursday, Dec. 14, the Greely Lady Rangers upset the York Lady Wildcats, 62-50, in the home opener for York.
York opened the scoring on a fast break bucket by Yeomelakis (team high 13) and after a steal by Morgan Taylor, Kristin Raymond scored on a pop from the side. Taylor fed Meredith for a runner and then fed Stephanie Plaisted on an inbounds play. Yeomelakis combined with Plaisted for another hoop and then sophomore Meredith Reid added a hook shot to give York an 11-7 lead after just four minutes. Greely called time, but the tempo didn't change as both teams were using a full-court press and forcing turnovers. Taylor rebounded and fired an outlet pass to Yeomelakis for another hoop before Plaisted combined with Haley Westman on a fast break. Greely countered on a trey from the corner by Megan McDevitt, but Kim Rigano picked up a steal and fed Taylor who led Reid for a buzzer beater and York led 20-16 at the end of a high scoring first quarter.
The fouls were starting to mount up and both teams were in the double bonus in the second period. York had three players with three fouls a piece and they had to take some bench time. Greely started to take control as McDevitt scored on another trey from the top. Despite a base line bucket by Taylor, the Rangers outscored the Wildcats 13-6 in the second period and took a 29-26 lead at the half.
Raymond opened the third period with a pop from the top of the key and Yeomelakis scored from the same spot for the Lady Cats. But the Rangers rallied with nine quick points, including another trey by McDevitt, and led 38-30 when York called time at the 5:23 mark.
Taylor scored on a put back and also from the wing. Stephanie Hartman combined with Yeomelakis on a fast break and Brittany Bracy picked up a pair of assists to Taylor and Hartman, but Greely was still running and gunning and took a 52- 43 lead going into the final period.
Greely went into a deep freeze and York was forced to foul, but the Lady Cats could only score on three free throws by Plaisted and a pair of baskets by Raymond.
Senior Tri-Captain Jenna Yeomelakis was on the sideline with her leg in a brace and may not be cleared medically to join the team until after the holidays. Final score: Greely 62, York 50.
