Varsity girls' ice hockey skates in thriller; JV wraps up full weekend
YORK - Girls' ice hockey lost a thriller to Scarborough on Saturday, Dec. 16.Scarborough took the early lead on two goals from Chelsea Barrett, and then York's Megan Yorke and Linnie Blais responded in the second period to knot the game at 2 after two periods. Both York goals were assisted by Catherine Lindbom.
Natalie Kaknes gave York a 3-2 lead before Jackie Morin of Scarborough tied the game two minutes later and then gave the opposition the lead with two minutes remaining in the game. But 40 seconds later, Lindbom tied the game on a breakaway from Kaknes and Lauren Coupal.
Morin responded just 20 seconds later with the game winner. She then added a pair of open net goals to end the game with five goals.
The junior varsity team had a busy weekend with four games.
On Friday, Dec. 15, they traveled to Falmouth where Nell Henderson-Brown, Emily Wall and Kristina Clements scored in the 3-0 win. Kellee Cribby had an assist.
On Saturday, Henderson-Brown scored and Ashley Taylor assisted in the 1-1 tie versus Scarborough.
Sunday, York played Cheverus at the Cumberland County Civic Center and Kelsey Caramihalis, Cribby and Clements all scored in the second period and Kacey Coffenbury allowed only one goal in the 3-1 victory.
Blais, Kelly Landry and Henderson-Brown each had an assist in the game.
On Monday, the team traveled to Portland for their fourth consecutive game and defeated Portland 4-0. Natalie Mendoza, Ellie Giles, Taylor and Aly Sweet each scored a goal. Caramihalis, Mendoza, Cribby and Caroline Hird each had an assist.
Ashly Neal recorded the shut out in goal and the team is 5-0-2 on the season.
