Girl Scout concert brings the holidays home

By Melissa Wood

SOUNDS OF THE SEASON. Members of York Girl Scout Troop 1424 visited the York Housing Authority's new residences at Village Woods last week to perform two holiday concerts in the spirit of the season. The members of Troop 1424 are, in alphabetical order, Katherine Boner, Abby Cruz, Olivia Duggan, Samantha Ferland, Kelley Francis, Annie Graziano, Madeline Laroux and Emily Sudrabin.

YORK VILLAGE - Despite recent unseasonably warm temperatures, the new residences at Village Woods felt and sounded a lot like Christmas last week.

That's because the members of York Girl Scout Troop 1424 presented two holiday concerts for the residents of the senior housing development on Friday evening. Dec. 15.

"We did caroling last year," said Annie Graziano, 10, but this time the troop went out on a limb, with some of the members performing with musical instruments, although the fifth-graders have just begun taking band in school.

With just three months of band and a few weeks of practice for the concert, the girls capably performed "Jingle Bells" and "My Dreidel," using instruments such as the trombone, saxophone, flute and clarinet.

They also sang "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas."

The girls' efforts were appreciated by seniors who attended.

"They're very nice," said Gloria Oppizi. "I'm just surprised by how many play instruments!"

Marie Donato agreed.

"We really enjoyed it," she said. "It's beautiful."

Troop members include Graziano, Emily Sudrabin, Olivia Duggan, Madeline, Laroux, Kelley Francis, Abby Cruz, Samantha Ferland, and Katherine Boner, who could not attend because she was under the weather. The Girl Scouts performed for residents in each of the new York Housing Authority buildings, Deerfield Place and Pine Grove.

"We've only been in the new building for three months," said Donato. "This made our holidays that much happier."

The scouts also brought gifts of ornaments for the residents.
