Strimling stands up for Maine people
Dear Independent,I am responding to Al Diamon's recent column entitled "Scary Guy."
I agree with one thing Mr. Diamon said. Republicans are very likely worried at the thought of "Congressman Ethan Strimling." They should be. Out of the gaggle of Democrats that are thinking of running for Tom Allen's seat when he makes a run against Susan Collins, Senator Strimling stands out. Not only does he stand out - he stands up. He has shown a level of leadership and courage that is lacking in politicians today. From his resolution against the war in Iraq three years ago (before it was popular), making Maine's Senate the first legislative body in the country to come out against the war, to his stance against the governor's questionable borrowing package in the state budget last session, Ethan Strimling makes decisions in the Maine tradition of statesman-like values. He stands up for Maine people.
On the other hand, I must disagree with Mr. Diamon on another topic. Diamon says some local Democrats are mad because Ethan Strimling stood up to Cabela's demand for a sweetheart tax deal. I, for one, am glad he had the courage to stand up to this out-of-state company looking to put itself at an advantage over everyone else. Ethan Strimling demanded fairness - Cabela's has to play by the same rules that Maine companies have to play by.
I hope he does run for Congress, because I look forward to sending someone to Washington with the courage of his convictions.
