Lady Yachtsmen sink Lady Wildcats, 43-37
By Stan Ross
YORK - Last Tuesday, Dec. 19, the York Lady Wildcats (1-4) played host to the Falmouth Lady Yachtsmen (4-1).For the first three periods it was a well-played, highly competitive game, 29-29, but then Falmouth made 10 of 12 free-throws in the final quarter while York never got to the line at all, and the final score read Falmouth 43, York 37.
Meredith Reid fed Morgan Taylor on a slash to the hoop to open the scoring for York, but Falmouth countered when Jordan Haley went end-to-end for a layup. Then scrappy Kim Rigano picked up a pair of steals and converted one into a fast-break bucket.
Taylor added a pop from the wing and then fed Reid for a layup, but Paige Wyman (team high 14) countered with five quick points. The Lady Wildcats led 9-7 at the end of the first period and Reid scooped up a loose ball and drove to the hoop to lead off the second quarter. Taylor (game high 15) scored again on a shot from the corner and then blocked a Falmouth attempt.
Rigano scored again on a breakaway, but Wyman countered with two quick hoops for Falmouth. York now led 17-14 and Taylor hit a trey from the corner before Laney Yeomelakis scored on a slash to the hoop. Falmouth countered with five quick points, including a hook shot at the buzzer by Andie Doyle that cut York's margin to three, 22-19, at the half.
Falmouth opened with five quick points and took the lead for the first time, 25-24, to open up the third period. York regained the lead after a feed from Rigano to Stephanie Plaisted and a steal for an end-to-end breakaway by Rigano, which made the score 27-26. Falmouth countered with a pop from the top by Wyman and York closed on a fast-break pass from Brittany Bracy to Taylor to even the score at 29-29 at the end of three periods.
Then came the fatal fourth when Wyman opened up with a free throw and Falmouth went into a deep freeze. York was forced to foul and the Lady Yachtsmen added two field goals and 10 free-throws while York could only counter with hoops by Yeomelakis and Taylor.
York Coach Rick Clark called a time out with 57 seconds to play and set up two more hoops for Yeomelakis, but Wyman finished the game with a pair of free-throws to make the final score 43-37.
Next on the agenda is a Christmas tournament at Gorham Dec. 27 through 29.
