Abigail R. Bowers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Bowers of Cape Neddick, is among the 745 students who entered Colgate University with the Class of 2010 in late August. The class is one of the most diverse and academically gifted in Colgate's history, according to the college. Bowers is a graduate of York High School.Julianna DeStefano of York, who is pursuing an associate's degree in hotel management from the Johnson & Wales University Hospitality College at the Denver, Colo., campus, has been named to the Dean's List for the fall 2006 term. To receive Dean's List commendation, students must earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.40 or above.
Katherine Lindbom, Matthew Wagner and Jared Webber have been nominated as candidates to the U. S. Naval Academy, Annapolis. Lindbom is from Cape Neddick and Wagner is from York, and both are students at York High School. Webber is from York and is a student at Phillips Exeter Academy. Maine Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins announced the nominations on Tuesday, Nov. 21. To be considered for an appointment to a service academy, applicants must be nominated by an authorized nominating source, which includes members of Congress.
Samuel B. Ramus of York Harbor has been welcomed as a member of the St. Lawrence University Class of 2010. Ramus graduated from York High School. Each St. Lawrence freshman will participate in St. Lawrence University's innovative First-Year Program, an introduction to the liberal arts curriculum taught in residence halls by faculty teams. Clear writing and speaking skills are stressed, and careful advising is provided for all freshmen.
Miriam Stevens of Cape Neddick, the daughter of Scott and Nancy Stevens and a graduate of York High School, has begun her first year at Mount Holyoke College, the oldest institution of higher education for women in the United States. Stevens was the president of York High School's chapter of the National Honor Society and received many awards including the Phi Beta Kappa Achievement Award, the Middlebury Book Award, the John K. Schroder Service Award, the Karen Webster Memorial Award, the Presidential Freedom Scholarship and the York Public Library Scholarship. Her extracurricular activities included serving as secretary of the student government, Interact and YorkWISE, and singing with the school choir and chamber singers. She also volunteered her time with the York Public Library. A member of the Societe Honoraire de Francais, Stevens plans to continue her French language studies at Mount Holyoke in preparation for an advanced degree.
Jodie Ladderbush Walsh, team captain, was inducted into the Becker College Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 15. Jodie was one of the top guards in school history. She was named to the Kodak All-District first team and All New England first team during the 1984-85 basketball season, where she earned MVP honors. Her 179 points scored in 1983-84 is the third most in school history. Jodie played in all 49 games and scored 429 points. She is a graduate of Wells High School.
