Gwendolyn Haynes

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Gwendolyn Mardin (Trefethen) Haynes, 96, died on Dec. 29, 2006, in Montgomery, Alabama.

Mrs. Haynes was born in Waterville, Maine, April 17, 1910. She graduated from Deering High School in Portland in 1928 and from Colby College in 1932. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. In 1964, she received a Master of Arts degree in French from Middlebury College.

She taught in several Maine towns: Waldoboro High School; Potter Academy, Sebago; Foxcroft Academy, Dover Foxcroft; and Traip Academy, Kittery, before her retirement in 1970. She was a Fulbright exchange teacher in Brussels, Belgium, 1955-56, and was a member of the Fulbright Alumni Association.

Following retirement, she lived in Sarasota and Bradenton, Fla., before moving to Montgomery in 1997.

She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Marie M. Hamilton, of Ocala, Fla.; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Bettie Mardin of Portland, Maine; three sons, Robert T. Trefethen, Montgomery; Michael W. Trefethen, Las Vegas, Nevada, and William J. Trefethen, Green Valley, Ariz.; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.

Following cremation, her remains will be interred in Needham, Mass.
