Lady Wildcats basketball wins two, loses one

By Stan Ross

YORK - The Lady Wildcats (3-5) were on the road in Naples last Friday, Jan. 5, to take on the Lake Region Lady Lakers (6-1) but did not bring any of their home floor magic.

York fell behind quickly as they could only score in single digits while the Lady Lakers were doubling up in every period on their way to a 25 to 11 halftime lead.

Christina Ricci led the Lakers with 13 points while Morgan Taylor led York with 10 including York's only three pointer. The Lady 'Cats lost to the Lady Lakers, 49 to 23.

Lady Wildcats down Wells, 50-38

Last Wed., Jan. 3, on what irrepressible announcer Jeff Barry called "Welcome back Jenna night," the York Lady 'Cats (3-4) raced to a 10-0 opening lead over their archrivals, the Wells Lady Warriors (3-4). Tri-Captain Jenna Yeomelakis, with a heavy brace on her right knee, was making her first appearance of the season.

York Coach Rick Clark said after the game, "Jenna gives us a big lift, but I held my breath when she went down after a hard foul in the closing minutes. The straps on her brace let go, but the brace itself held just as it was designed and there was no further harm to her leg."

York opened the scoring with a trey from the corner by Taylor and then sophomore Laney Yeomelakis (game high 14) added another trey from the wing. Jenna Yeomelakis scored her first hoop of the season when she drained a pop from the wing.

Trailing 8-0, Wells Coach Don Abbot called a quick timeout at the 5:05 mark.

Stephanie Plaisted scored after a steal and Laney Yeomelakis added another trey from the wing before Wells got on the board with five quick points to make the score York 13, Wells 5 at the end of the first period.

Jenna Yeomelakis opened the second quarter with a breakaway bucket but Emily Wallingford hit a pair of treys for Wells. Taylor fed Stephanie Hartman for a hoop and sophomore Meredith Reid added a steal and two blocked shots. Then after a steal by Jenna Yeomelakis, Plaisted drained a shot from the wing and Brittany Bracy closed out the half with a put-back to give York a commanding 22 to 13 lead.

Fouls had been piling up against York and when both Taylor and Reid picked up their fourth fouls in the first minute of the third period, the Lady 'Cats looked like they might be in trouble. But Bracy fed Laney Yeomelakis after a clean steal and Plaisted combined with Laney Yeomelakis on a give-and-go and York still led 28 to 17 at the 3:53 mark.

Wallingford countered with a trey for Wells but Laney Yeomelakis answered with a trey on a feed by Kim Rigano. Wells hit on five free throws while Laney Yeomelakis answered with a fine scoop shot on a breakaway and York led 36 to 25 after three periods.

Wells was in the double bonus and combined five free-throws plus a smooth spin move by Alana Kelley to run off 11 straight points and pull into a 36-36 tie. Then Jenna Yeomelakis (nine for the game) took over with a pair of hoops and Reid and Plaisted each had a pair from the line to rebuild York's lead to 44-38 with 1:25 left in the game. Reid closed out the scoring for York on a feed from Plaisted and also scored on a put-back to make the final score York 50, Wells 38.

Lady Wildcats romp over Lady Capers, 40-36

On the Friday before Christmas, the York Lady Wildcats traveled to Cape Elizabeth and exploded for an 18-5 first period lead that became 35-21 at the end of three periods before they coasted to win by the final score of 40-36.

Laney Yeomelakis and Taylor sparked York in the early going with five points each in the first period. The shorthanded York team had seven girls in the scoring column.

The next regular season games are at Freeport this Thursday, Jan. 11, at 6:30 p.m., and then at home on Saturday, Jan. 13, at the unusual starting time of 5 p.m. against Traip Academy.
