Varsity and JV girls glide to victories on Saturday

YORK - Girls' ice hockey hosted Gorham on Saturday, Jan. 6, and skated away with two wins.

In the opener, the varsity girls took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Katherine Hird, assisted by Ali DiElsi.

Gorham tied the goal with 2 minutes remaining in the period.

The next two periods were back-and-forth before Alex Banfield got the game winner with 3 minutes to play in the game for the 2-1 victory.

Lauren Coupal and Nell Henderson-Brown assisted on the second goal.

Ashly Neal and Kacey Coffenbury had some spectacular saves, while only allowing the one goal.

In Saturday's second game, the junior varsity girls out skated Gorham 5-2.

Kellee Cribby had two goals, while Ashley Taylor, Kristina Clements and Linnie Blais each added a goal.

Assisting on the goals were Kelly Landry for two and Amy O'Brien.

One week earlier, the girls' ice hockey team lost to Portland on Saturday, Dec. 30, 5-2.

The score was 2-2 after two periods on goals scored by DiElsi and Henderson-Brown. Katherine Lindbom and Coupal assisted on the goals.

Nicole Fuller put Portland ahead to stay in the third period with her third goal of the game.

On Dec. 27, York had traveled to the Cumberland County Civic Center to play Scarborough, which had beaten York in a thriller a week and a half earlier.

Megan Yorke scored on a breakaway in the first period to give York the 1-0 advantage.

Lindbom scored in the second period, assisted by Sara Hanlon and Blais, and Natalie Kaknes closed the door when she scored York's third goal with 2 minutes to play in the game. Coupal assisted on the third goal for a 3-1 victory.

York had been shut out in its previous two games against Yarmouth and Gorham.
