Indoor track season starts strong

YORK - On Friday, Jan. 5, the boys' and girls' indoor track teams opened the season with a rousing victory.

The boys scored 196.5 points, besting Gray-New Gloucester (149), Wells (98), North Yarmouth Academy (83), Traip (48.5) and Freeport (46).

The girls scored 280.17 points, dominating over North Yarmouth Academy (95.5), Traip (81), Wells (60), Gray-New Gloucester (53.33) and Freeport (49).

Combined, the boys and girls won a total of 17 events.

Annie Boardman, Monique Boutin, Molly Carl and Lacey Cartier began the night with a win in the 4x800 relay.

Nick McMahon, Ryan Means, Dan Herbein and Kevin Higgins placed second in the boys' relay.

The Wildcats proceeded to win three of the four hurdle races. Katie Rasche won the senior girls' hurdles, as well as the senior girls 400 dash. Her brother Sam won the junior boys' hurdles.

Chelsea Tewell won the junior girls hurdles, setting a Western Maine record in the process. The sophomore won three more events: long jump, triple jump and the junior girls' 55 dash.

York also won three of the four high jump events. Regan Cleminson set a junior class school record with a leap of 5 feet. Pat Graham won the senior boys, clearing 5 feet, 6 inches. Molly Carl won the junior girls at 4 feet, eight inches.

Kristina Clements won the senior girls' 200 dash. In the senior girls' shot-put, Alison Bailey triumphed with a throw of 24 feet, 3 inches. Sibley Blum easily won the girls' pole vault, setting a new school senior class record at 9 feet, 6 inches. Cartier won the girls' open 800 run.

The girls' team ended the evening with a sweep of the relays. Carl, Christine Buford, Emily Marshall and Kirsten Dean won the junior girls 4x200 relay. In the very next race, Clements, Rasche, Jess Cassotis and Jenna Hosmer won the senior girls' 4x200 relay.

Both the junior and senior boys' 4x200 relay teams placed third. Herbein, Rasche, Cory Gallant and Ryan Kelly ran the junior boys' relay. Andrew Potter, Dave Cannata, Robert Cook and Mark Vogel ran the senior relay.

Numerous other Wildcats placed in a multitude of events, including, on the girls' side: Boardman (mile, 2-mile), Carl (800), Cartier (800), Cassotis (high jump, long jump, hurdles), Hillary Christopher (shot-put), Cleminson (triple jump, hurdles), Dean (high jump, hurdles, pole vault), Kaitlyn Dow (high jump, hurdles), Winona Hapgood (800), Lauren Holly (55), Hosmer (55, 200), Stephanie Lomasney (hurdles, 400), Marshall (55, 200, triple jump), Meghan McCrory (shot-put), Jillian Means (pole vault), Noelle Moulton (long jump), Emma Pressey (shot-put), Kiera Pressey (shot-put), Lindsay Putnam (shot-put), Lizzie Roy (shot-put, hurdles), Lauren Stein (shot-put), Marina Swietek (55) and Kylie Vallee (2-mile).

The boys' team also featured numerous point scorers, including Cory Borgel (55, long jump, shot- put), Cannata (high jump, 200), Jack Carley (2-mile), Mike Cline (55), Cook (55, 200), Cam Dillon (high jump), Brian Farrell (400), Nat Freeman (2-mile), Cory Gallant (high jump, hurdles), Justin Gallant (triple jump, long jump, hurdles), Graham (55, triple jump), Herbein (400, 2-mile), Higgins (mile, 800), Nick Hill (55, 200), Jayce Insko (high jump), Kelly (200, 400), Billy Kennedy (shot-put), Mike Lapointe (2-mile), John McCafferty (high jump, 55, 200), McMahon (mile), Anthony Molino (hurdles), Alex Moser (400), Potter (long jump, triple jump), Rasche (high jump), Patrick Seaward (high jump, hurdles) and Vogel (hurdles, 400).

The track team gets back into action this Friday, Jan. 12, at the University of Southern Maine's Costello Field House at 3:30 p.m. The competition is identical to last week's meet, with the addition of Cape Elizabeth.
