MAKING A DIFFERENCE. The Knights of Columbus recently raised funds to benefit worthy causes by holding an oil raffle. Pictured is Knights of Columbus Committee Chairman Bob McKenna, left, handing a check for $1,000 to support fuel assistance efforts to Lorna Ryan, director of the York Community Service Association, while former Grand Knight Gary E. Smith and Grand Knight John Flanagan look on. Ryan said the need for fuel assistance is out there because, even though fuel costs have come down, they are still high and by this time of year many families have gone through their first tank of oil already. "People who have fallen on hard times and we just give them a boost," she said. For more information on fuel assistance, contact YCSA at 363-5504. See next week's edition for a special feature on the Knights of Columbus, the work they do and charities they support.

The good news, from a budget standpoint, is that the York School Department's proposed fiscal 2008 operating budget has met the Property Tax Task Force target of a 4.7 percent increase. Today, Wednesday, Jan. 10, you have a chance to make a lifesaving difference for York High School senior Jason Durkin or, perhaps, for someone you will never know. The land that once served as home to some of the town's most destitute residents could be preserved forever as a combination historic site and public park. The town's newest representatives to the Maine Legislature and the team behind a plan to bring a swimming complex to Bog Road have updated the Board of Selectmen on issues close to home and at the statehouse. The numbers are in, and last year's York High School junior class scored well above the state average - and tops among area school districts - in the Standardized Aptitude Test (SAT) assessment. Dr. Sarah W. Holland will travel to Guatemala this month to perform volunteer plastic surgery for underprivileged children with facial defects. By Town Planner Steve Burns
