Harry Anslow
CAPE NEDDICK - Harry Joseph Anslow, known as Harry Jay, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, at home.Harry was born on March 16, 1916, in Troy, N.Y., the son of Samuel Henry Anslow from Shropshire, England, and Nora Scully of Roscrea, Ireland. His father was a policeman in Troy. He had two brothers, Bill and Joseph, and a sister, Lillian.
After graduating from high school, he helped his family through the long Depression years by taking any job he could find. He enlisted in the service in 1939 and served until the end of World War II as a gunner in the Air Force. He was stationed in Texas when he met and married his first wife, Natalie. They moved to Goffstown, N.H., where he had his two daughters and lived for 20 years. He then moved to Nashua, N.H., where he worked for Sanders Associates as a designer for many years. It was there that he met his second wife, Charlotte, who predeceased him by eight years.
Harry was a poet, and wrote verse that was both personal and whimsical. He was recently published three times in the York Weekly Village Verse. He had a wonderful sense of humor and told a joke with just the right timing. His remarkable memory allowed him to quote long poems that he learned in high school. He often burst into song and had a merry way about him. Harry was truly an Old World gentleman, both soft-spoken and calm in any situation.
His lifelong love of golf started when he was a caddy in his teens. He earned many trophies for a long, straight drive and a good putt.
Harry leaves two daughters, Deborah Anslow Nelson of New Brunswick, and Pamela Anslow Wallis and her lifelong partner Lewis Woodaman of Cape Neddick; two stepdaughters, Janice and her husband Edwin Brackett of Hudson, N.H., and Linda and her husband David Burke of North Reading, Mass.; two grandchildren, Kimberly Nelson and Geoffrey Nelson, both of Calgary, Alberta, as well as an extended stepfamily. Also mourning his death is his special friend, Dottie Guevin of Nashua, N.H.
The funeral service for Mr. Anslow was held at noon on Sunday, Jan. 14, in the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of York, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.
