York romped to a 40-16 lead after three periods on their way to a 42-32 win over their traditional rival, the Class C Traip Academy Lady Rangers (7-4).
Brittany Bracy took the opening tip for York and Jenna Yeomelakis fed her sister Laney Yeomelakis on a fast break to open the scoring. Then the sisters combined again when Jenna came up with a steal and took a pass from Laney to score on a breakaway. Less than two minutes into the game and Traip was forced to call time.
Then Stephanie Plaisted fed J. Yeomelakis for a pop from the top and Morgan Taylor grabbed a rebound and fed an outlet pass to Bracy for a breakaway bucket. Kim Rigano set up J. Yeomelakis for a trey from the wing and Kortnee Cribby scored at the buzzer.
York led 13 to 5 to start the second period and continued to interrupt the Rangers offense with steals by Rigano and Cribby. A block by Cribby and a rebound plus a pair of put backs by Taylor gave York a 20 to 8 lead at the half.
Bracy countered a Traip fast break by Kim Guay with a put-back and Taylor (game high 12) scored again on a fast break as York held a commanding 14-point lead. The York lead continued to climb as L. Yeomelakis and Taylor each drained a pair of free-throws. Traip countered on a pop from the top by Ali Higgins but a fast break by Plaisted and another put-back by Bracy maintained the Wildcat lead.
Taylor and L. Yeomelakis each made a pair of hoops to close out the period and York held a 40 to 16 lead.
York Coach Rick Clark used all 11 of his healthy players and eight ended up in the scoring column. Stephanie Hartman fed Brittany Barrett for the Wildcats final hoop and Traip finished with a 16-point quarter but the final result was never in doubt. Taylor led York with 12 points and 17 rebounds for her third straight "double, double."
Lady Wildcats bury Lady Falcons, 50-41
Last Thursday, Jan. 11, the York Lady Wildcats (5-5) traveled to Freeport and used all their players as they rolled to a 50-41 win over the Lady Falcons (1-9).
York, paced by the rebounding and scoring of Taylor and Meredith Reid, raced to a 14 to 5 first quarter lead and never looked back. York had four players with seven or more points including Taylor with 12, Reid with 10, J. Yeomelakis with 9 and L. Yeomelakis with 7. Hannah Boutin had a team high 12 for Freeport.
Lady Wildcats edge by Lady Patriots, 38-33
Last Tuesday, Jan. 9, the York Lady Wildcats used a strong second half to hold off the Gray-New Gloucester Lady Patriots (5-4) in a tightly-contested game. After a steal by Reid, York opened the scoring on a put-back by Taylor. Then J. Yeomelakis scored on a strong spin move and Taylor (game high 20) came up with another steal and went end-to-end for a lay-up to give York a 7-4 lead at the quarter.
J. Yeomelakis scored again on a slash to the hoop but GNG countered with six straight points to take a 10-9 lead. Then Taylor made three the hard way and took a feed from J. Yeomelakis and nailed a trey from the wing to give the Lady Wildcats a 15-10 lead at the half.
L. Yeomelakis opened the third quarter with a steal and Reid drained a hoop from the wing before Plaisted joined the fun with a steal that led to a pair of free throws and a slash to the hoop to give York a 21-15 lead at the 3:41 mark. Another rebound by Reid led to a feed from J. Yeomelakis to Taylor for a pop from the corner and the Wildcats led 24 to 17 going into the final period.
GNG countered quickly, paced by Olivia Ryan with eight of her team high 14 points, and narrowed York's lead to one point, 30-29, when the Lady 'Cats called time with just 2:18 remaining. Then Plaisted fed Taylor for another hoop before Taylor picked up her fourth foul and GNG drained a pair of free throws.
York now led 32 to 31 with just 59 seconds remaining. The Patriots bench was assessed with two technical fouls and J. Yeomelakis made three of four free throws to ice the game for York, who went on to win by the final score of 38 to 33. Taylor had a strong double, double for the Lady Wildcats as she added 15 rebounds to go with her 20 points.
Next on the schedule is a home game versus Yarmouth on Friday, Jan. 19, at 7 p.m., followed by a road game at Falmouth on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
