Eat at Pizzeria UNO to help fight bone marrow disease

YORK - Everyone is invited to support the effort to put an end to a potentially fatal disease by dining at Pizzeria UNO at the corner of Central Avenue and High Street in Dover, N.H., next Wednesday, Jan. 24.

All proceeds will benefit the PNH Foundation, which is based in Eliot and was formed by Sara Higgins, a survivor of PNH and twin sister of York Police Department Communications Specialist Nathaniel Higgins.

PNH stands for Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria, a disorder in which the most immature of the blood-forming cells in the bone marrow, the stem cells, are lacking proteins that prevent them from being destroyed by the body.

The destruction is intermittent and usually occurs at night, creating problems in the platelets, red cells and white cells and causing problems with clotting, anemia and the body's ability to fight infections. PNH can lead to leukemia.

To help put an end to this disease, all you need to do is stop by for a meal anytime on Jan. 24 and Pizzeria UNO will donate 20 percent of the cost to the PNH Foundation.

However, you must make sure to present a coupon to the cashier for funds to be donated. Coupons may be downloaded from the foundation's website at www.pnhfoundation.org.

The foundation aims to fund research that is badly needed to help cure this life-threatening disease. This research could help also shed light into what causes leukemia, the most serious and common cancer among children.

The PNH Foundation also helps families by covering disease-related expenses, such as travel costs, that are not covered by insurance.
