Currents in Education

DOING THE RIGHT THING. Last Friday, Jan. 19, the third- and fourth-grade students at Coastal Ridge Elementary School spent a portion of their morning learning about making the right decisions when it comes to bullying and prejudice. School Counselor Kathy Welch hosted the Civil Rights Assembly, sponsored by the school's Civil Rights Team, which featured a special visit by Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Thomas Harnett. Harnett shared emotionally-charged stories of incidents that had the children talking - long after the assembly was done - about how they could stand up for what is right. All the students took part in singing songs of the Civil Rights movement, accompanied by music teacher Karen Littlefield, and a group of fourth-grade students in the school's Horizon's Program, pictured here, who have been working under the direction of volunteer Melanie Sobotka, performed their own play adapted from the book, "Hey, Little Ant."
