By York County Commissioner Gloria Raleigh Layman

On Dec. 27, 2006, the newly elected commissioners were sworn in at the Alfred courthouse, Dedimus Justice Joe Hansley doing the honors of officiating at the ceremony.

The Commissioners are Sallie Chandler, District 1; Gloria R. Layman, District 5; Richard Dutremble, District 2, and Daniel Cabrel, District 3. David Carpenter is also a commissioner, but he was not up for re-election.

On Jan. 3 we had our first 2007 meeting, where officers were elected for the York County Commission Board. Elected were Richard Dutremble, District 2, chairman; Gloria R. Layman, District 5, vice chairman. With our two new commissioners and three previous commissioners, the first meeting of the New Year began. Our agenda is a full one: first in mind, to watch carefully the new budget and cut where it is possible to save the taxpayers' dollars.

I will give you a brief summary of last year's accomplishments. We have had a lot to accomplish at the county, trying to keep costs down and yet to get major repairs done at the historic courthouse. We had to have all new windows installed and insulated. Air conditioners could not be put in the new windows. Therefore, an investment was made to install a system to take care of heating and the air conditioning that would not interfere with the historic framework of the building. After much deliberation, the county decided to go G. Thermal with the digging of two 400-foot walls for the cooling and heating system. It still is in the process, but coming close to the finished product.

We are looking forward to trying to push forward with all legal permits to use the old jail in Alfred for office space and overflow from the county courthouse. We finally got permission from town of Alfred to upgrade the building, use it and not let it deteriorate any further.

We are finally gaining ground with our dispatch center and with PSAPs (Public Safety Answering Points) coming into final conclusions with this by mid-January.

We have a newly elected sheriff, "Moe" Ouellette. "Moe" has years of experience with the department of law enforcement agencies. I'm sure things will continue to be excellent.

My best to you, Sheriff Cote, and much luck to you and your family.

Last but not least, we have a newly elected county treasurer, Nancy Auclair. With her vast experience and knowledge and degrees in her field, we are all happy and anxious to welcome her aboard.
