"From the Front" continues
YORK VILLAGE - Join Old York Historical Society, the York Public Library and York Adult and Community Education for a continuation of the series, "From the Front," on Feb. 6 from 7 to 9 p.m.This oral history presentation by World War II veterans continues at the library with "Tales of a Country Boy Who Went to War," presented by Roland Glenn, focusing on his service as a combat platoon leader and company commander on Okinawa during the last battle of World War II.
His story ranges from life as a typical young man growing up in rural America to basic training, where he was taught how to kill the enemy. He was later trained as a leader, went into combat and, by the end of the war, was part of the team that met with the Japanese on peaceful terms to repatriate them. Finally, Glenn will discuss his journey back home, which is particularly poignant today with so many of our young men going to battle and returning home faced with similar challenges.
Then, on Feb. 13, also from 7 to 9 p.m., the library will be the site of "Remembrances of Wartime," first given as part of a Veteran's Day series last fall and now back by popular demand.
Join a panel of nine World War II veterans and home-front supporters who will share stories and remembrances of their experiences during wartime. Included in the talk will be a "Rosie the Riveter" who worked at a Portland shipyard; two women who were children during the war, one in London and one recruited under Hitler to a German war camp and an eyewitness to the signing of the Japanese surrender, as well as personal stories of friendship and loss.
The program will include excerpts from an oral history project conducted by residents of Sentry Hill for presentation to the Library of Congress.
There will be time at the end of each program for questions, stories and conversations to share. The events are free; however, donations will be accepted.
