Lady Wildcats ground Falcons, 56-37

YORK - Last Saturday, Feb. 3, the York Lady Wildcats rolled to an early 14-4 lead over the Freeport Falcons (2-14) after just six minutes, and never looked back.

The game had been postponed from Friday but the Lady 'Cats (9-7) were raring to go as the Yeomelakis sisters led the early scoring.

Freeport scored first on a fast break by Kaitlyn Soule, but York countered after a steal by Jenna Yeomelakis and a slash to the hoop by Laney Yeomelakis.

Then Jenna Yeomelakis scored on a trey from the wing and added a steal for a breakaway bucket. Jenna Yeomelakis fed Laney Yeomelakis for a trey from the top before Stephanie Plaisted fed Brittany Bracy for a breakaway basket. Morgan Taylor nailed a pair of free-throws and Jenna Yeomelakis closed out the period with a pop-shot to give York a commanding 18-8 lead at the quarter.

Then sophomore Meredith Reid had a hot streak when she scored on a put-back, blocked a shot at the other end, came up with a rebound, scored on a smooth spin move and picked up a steal and a fast-break bucket, all in the first three minutes of the second period.

Stephanie Hartman added a pair of free-throws York nailed their first eight free-throws in a row, and sophomore Laney Yeomelakis (game high 16) scored from the corner and then again on a slash to the hoop.

York Coach Rick Clark used all 12 of his players and 10 scored.

Kortnee Cribby fed Haley Westman for a baseline basket and Sharon Ehret closed out the half with a hoop from the corner to give the Lady Wildcats a 34-21 lead.

York put the game out of reach when they opened the third quarter with a 12-2 spurt in the first four minutes. First Taylor fed Reid on a breakaway, then J. Yeomelakis hit L. Yeomelakis for a trey from the wing and Reid came up with another steal. J. Yeomelakis scored from the corner and then came up with another steal and fed Taylor for a trey from the corner. Taylor and Plaisted each added a pair of free-throws as York took a 48-26 lead into the final period.

Kim Rigano added a pair of free-throws and fed Westman for a pop from the corner to make the final score York 56, Freeport 37.

York faced Cape Elizabeth at home on Tuesday, Feb. 6, in a game that ended after press time. York will then travel to Wells on Thursday, Feb. 8, for the final game of the regular season. York and Wells are both fighting to finish in the top six in the HEAL standings, which would give them a place in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs, starting Friday, Feb. 16.
